Silent Sparks – Movie Review & Film Summary

Silent Sparks is a Taiwanese movie about two gay gangsters and their secret relationship.

Silent Sparks is a Taiwanese movie about two gay gangsters and their secret relationship. After being released from jail, the main character returns to a life of crime. He works for his boss and breaks the law to make a living. However, he lands himself in legal trouble. When his former cellmate is released, the protagonist is eager to reunite with him. He wants to continue their undercover romance, but his partner seems distant around him.

I enjoy the grittiness of Silent Sparks, which depicts the world of crime as grim and unflinchingly raw. Beneath its quiet ambiance, the story contains thoughtful messages. The actors portray the roles well, embodying their gangster personas. However, the slow-burn film moves too slowly. From uneventful scenes to mundane chats, I was mostly bored. The gay romance also takes too long to develop. By the time there's a spark, the movie ends.

He reports to his boss, who assigns him illegal tasks with considerable risks. Pua completes these jobs for compensation, driven by his need for money. He doesn't hesitate to break the law to survive.

Pua lives with his single mother, who cares deeply for him and constantly worries about his activities. His habit of sneaking out at night only adds to her concerns. One night, Pua is tasked with assaulting a man. Although he completes the job and receives money, a surveillance camera captures the incident. The police quickly identify Pua as the perpetrator, and the victim confirms his identity.

Pua finds himself in legal trouble, worsened by his past criminal record. The victim offers an out-of-court settlement, but it requires large sums of money, including compensation for property damage. Pua, already strapped for cash, cannot afford it. His boss, who assigned him the task, remains unsympathetic. He sees Pua as just another expendable underling. The boss offers to lend him the money but with a high interest rate, frustrating Pua.

Mi Ji was Pua's cellmate, and they shared a close bond while in prison. Mi Ji looked out for Pua, protecting him from danger. The two also developed a secret romantic connection. After being released, Mi Ji rejoins the gang, taking on the role of his boss's right-hand man. Pua is eager to reconnect and continue their relationship. When Pua approaches Mi Ji, he is met with shocking distance. Mi Ji avoids talking to him and refuses contact. Pua feels hurt and confused by his cold behaviour.

Pua's legal troubles worsen. Frustrated, he lashes out at his boss for refusing to support him financially. Despite keeping his distance, Mi Ji notices Pua's desperation and tries to convince their boss to help, but his efforts fail. Then, Mi Ji reaches out to Pua and offers him a dangerous assignment that could earn enough money to cover the settlement costs. Pua is grateful to be on speaking terms with Mi Ji again and accepts the task. Together, they work toward a solution and reignite their connection.

Silent Sparks Review

Review

Movie Review Score: 6.6

C
Pua and Mi Ji face each other.

Silent Sparks is a gritty gangster movie that avoids glamorizing the profession. The opening scene shows the protagonist attacking an innocent man for money. He faces immediate consequences, from police questioning to legal troubles. As he moves through shadowy alleyways and seedy gambling dens, the story highlights the bleakness of his world. His life is a constant struggle, rocked by one hardship after another. Silent Sparks feels grim, cynical, and unflinchingly raw in portraying the harsh realities of crime.

The movie sets its mood by showcasing Pua's day-to-day routine. The filmmaker drops subtle clues about Pua's background, helping the audience understand him better. While the ordinary events and quiet conversations add to the realism, they slow down the pacing. In real life, many interactions are mundane and wouldn't translate well in a story, yet the film chooses to include them. A few scenes also seem redundant, repeating what was already established earlier. As Silent Sparks crawls through the first half, it becomes uneventful. You may grow bored while waiting for the plot to pick up.

The romance develops slowly. Mi Ji initially avoids Pua due to the taboo surrounding a gay relationship between two gangsters. While this hesitation is understandable, it means the couple makes little progress, adding to the plot's uneventfulness. I found myself getting antsy, waiting for the relationship to heat up. Tick tock, the movie is running out of time! Thankfully, Mi Ji warms to Pua in the second half, and their bond becomes more intimate near the end. However, it feels almost too little too late. When they finally build a spark, the film ends without exploring it further.

Pua and Mi Ji hooked up in prison, but the movie never shows us these encounters. Annoyingly, their love story is missing the beginning. It would have been insightful to see how they grew close as cellmates, making viewers emotionally invested in their relationship journey. Once they reunite on the outside, there are hardly any tender moments. Instead, their interactions always seem tense. Although Silent Sparks is marketed as a gay gangster film, it prioritizes drama over romance. As a BL fan, I expected more emphasis on the couple's affection.

Both leads deliver solid performances and seem authentic as gangsters. They display tough demeanours, stern expressions, and a convincing bravado. Since the movie emphasizes realism by avoiding theatrics, the actors must rely on subtle nuances to convey their feelings. Whether through an ambiguous look or a shift in body language, Guan Zhi Huang and Shih Ming Shuai perform consistently. Also, the actress playing Pua's mother (Ray Fan) deserves praise for her final scene. She shows both restraint and vulnerability while portraying her complex emotions.

Silent Sparks has a sad ending. It reinforces hopelessness as Pua fails to overcome his hardships. The story shows that his efforts are futile, extinguishing his spark of hope. A part of me responds well to the movie's quiet atmosphere and subtle messages. The thoughtful conclusion makes me reflect on Pua's journey. However, I was bored for most of the film. The story feels like too much of a slow burn, especially with the lack of romance. Although it excels in gritty realism, Silent Sparks isn't always compelling. In the end, the dullness overshadows my enthusiasm.

Summary

Dull story

Silent Sparks captures the grittiness and bleakness of living as a gangster. However, the slow pacing and repetitive scenes make the story feel uneventful. I was often bored during the story.

Lacklustre romance

Pua and Mi Ji's romance develops too slowly. While they become intimate near the end, the film doesn't give their feelings enough time to grow. As a BL fan, I was disappointed by the relationship scenes.

Solid acting

The cast performs consistently. Both leads appear authentic as gangsters and convey subtle nuances without relying on theatrics. The actress playing Pua's mom (Ray Fan) shines in the last scene.

Sad ending

Silent Sparks has a sad ending that reinforces Pua's hopelessness, showing his efforts are ultimately futile. While thought-provoking, it can't redeem the slow and uneventful build-up.

Gritty artistry

The film excels in gritty realism, capturing a bleak world through unpolished settings. However, some scenes are too poorly lit. Looking at shadows all the time isn't visually interesting.

66%

Silent Sparks delivers a gritty portrayal of gangster life with solid performances and a quiet atmosphere. However, the slow pacing and lacklustre romance make this movie feel boring most of the time.
