My Little Ghost – Series Review & Episode Guide

My Little Ghost is a Vietnamese supernatural BL series about a haunted home. After befriending the ghost in his house, the lead helps him resolve unfinished business from his past.

My Little Ghost is a Vietnamese supernatural BL series about a haunted house. After moving into his new home, the main character is shocked to meet a mischievous ghost. This spirit had died tragically seven years ago, yet he can't move on because of unfinished business. The protagonist agrees to help him dig into his past. As one investigation leads to another, they uncover shocking secrets. Along the way, they grow closer than expected.

With a quirky supernatural premise, My Little Ghost shines when it focuses on the fantasy elements. It shows a lot of imagination. A few emotional moments make me feel deeply, especially since the two leads deliver strong performances. However, the story has an annoying habit of going full-blown soap opera. There's too much melodrama. And too many coincidences. The couple is very gentle with each other, but their romance feels a bit vanilla.

My Little Ghost is a sad & emotional BL drama.

Plot

Kien gives Ke a piggyback.

Kien is a single guy looking for a new place to live. He stumbles across an old house with shockingly low rent. The landlord, Aunt Bay, is more than happy to hand over the keys right away. Then, her niece Linh casually mentions one tiny detail. The last tenant moved out in a panic and left all his stuff behind. Aunt Bay insists the furniture and decor are included for free. What a bargain, right? The deal sounds almost too good to be true.

Kien's friends are not buying it. Tung and Phu both think the house gives off weird vibes. The rent is way too cheap. No one has lived there for seven years. And the landlady is acting a little shady. Kien, on the other hand, sees a bargain. He doesn't believe in ghost stories anyway, so what is there to worry about? Cheap rent wins. He's moving in. Tung still slips him a wind chime for protection, just in case. He swears it will scare off bad luck. Kien rolls his eyes and laughs it off. If there really is a ghost in that house, he jokes that it should be scared of him instead.

After Kien settles in, the house decides to show its true colours. Stuff starts moving on its own. Doors creak. Random objects shift like they have a mind of their own. In the middle of the chaos, he slips and somehow manages to electrocute himself. When Kien regains consciousness, he isn't alone. Floating right in front of him is a ghost. Kien freaks out, obviously. The ghost pulls a few pranks just to mess with him, then lays down the rules. If Kien wants the haunting to stop, he must make offerings. A little food, a little respect, and the weird antics will calm down.

Kien and the ghost sit down and talk. The ghost admits he has forgotten most of his past. The only thing he clearly remembers is taking his own life in this very house. After he died, he met the Unparalleled Black and White, two soul reapers from the underworld. They told him that suicide is a serious sin, so he would be dragged away to face punishment. Terrified, he bolted. This old house has a powerful talisman that keeps the Unparalleled Black and White from entering. They wait outside, ready to grab him if he ever leaves. So, he has been stuck here for seven years.

The ghost can't just reincarnate. Apparently, someone in the living world is still tormented over his death. That regret is anchoring him here. The problem is, he has no idea who it is. Kien guesses it might be family. Except the ghost remembers things differently. As far as he knows, his family hated him. Kien decides they need to dig deeper into the ghost's past. He even gives him a nickname, Ke. As they live together, Kien and Ke start to grow closer in ways neither of them expected.

My Little Ghost Review

Review

Drama Review Score: 7.4

B-
Kien and Ke sleep together in the hospital bed.

In case the title wasn't obvious, My Little Ghost tells a story about a ghost. Sadly, this drama has the worst timing ever. It came out during a year when so many BL series jumped on the supernatural bandwagon. Ghost boyfriends are everywhere! Fans have already binged Khemjira, The Red Envelope, and a dozen other shows about dead people. My Little Ghost arrived fashionably late to a crowded genre. If this series had dropped a year or two earlier, the concept might seem fresh. Now, it gets overshadowed by similar romances.

The biggest selling point of My Little Ghost? Creativity. Making a human-ghost romance work takes serious imagination. The story actually has some really fun ideas. I love that it brings in characters from the underworld, like Madam White Spirit and The Unparalleled Black and White. They're the ghost police coming to collect Ke's wandering soul. Their scenes are quirky as hell! The fantasy elements make this series delightfully weird. Magical abilities? Mythical lore? Hey, that's unique! You don't see this kind of stuff in most BL dramas. My Little Ghost is at its best when it focuses on the supernatural hijinks.

This series is full of angst and melodrama, but I have such mixed feelings about the storylines. Some scenes can be so emotional. They make me feel things! Yet, the plot loses me when it goes full soap opera. The mom who abandoned her child suddenly returns. Why? She needs a bone marrow transplant from him. Are you kidding me? It's the most cliched trope ever. And the coincidences! Don't get me started. This woman just happens to be Ke's mom! That man just happens to be Ke's dad! What are the odds that everyone in this universe is secretly related?

Some of the supporting cast graduated from the School of Overacting. Thankfully, the two leads are much better. Kien's actor (Nguyen Thanh Huy) leaves a positive impression. This guy is super telegenic. His smile? Devastating. But he's not just a pretty face. He delivers a solid performance too. His character gets hit with emotionally heavy scenes left and right. Crying. Suffering. More crying. And he handles it well! His co-star (Bach Kiet) also deserves props. He's good at playing sensitive and vulnerable. When Ke tears up, I feel it. I'm reaching for those tissues.

Kien and Ke are so nice to each other. Their interactions are soft and gentle. Unfortunately, these two lack chemistry. Hate to say it, but they're a little bland. When I compare this relationship to other BL series, it feels vanilla. The story doesn't give the couple enough romantic scenes to showcase their sparks. Supernatural antics? There's plenty of that. Soap opera melodrama? Almost too much. Yet, it's missing the sweet bonding moments. We need more scenes of them flirting. Falling in love. Connecting instead of just reacting to ghost drama and family secrets.

The ending? There are some things I liked, such as Ke finding closure with his family. There are also things I disliked. Ke doesn't spend enough time with Kien, so their romance underwhelms me. And can you believe Kien wore that ugly costume for the couple's last kiss? How camp! Overall, I respect the story's creativity. A few emotional scenes tugged at my heartstrings. However, My Little Ghost hasn't left the strongest impression on me. This middle-of-the-road BL drama is at risk of being unmemorable. Not bad by any means… But it might fade from my memory over time.

Summary

Creative story

My Little Ghost has a creative supernatural premise with some quirky ideas. However, the plot gets bogged down by cliched soap opera melodrama and too many convenient coincidences.

Vanilla romance

The couple is sweet and gentle with each other, but they lack the chemistry needed to make their relationship memorable. Make them flirt more! Give us some actual passion!

Emotional acting

The two leads deliver strong performances. Kien's actor (Nguyen Thanh Huy) handles heavy emotional scenes well. His co-star (Bach Kiet) tugs at heartstrings with his vulnerable portrayal of Ke.

Sad ending

My Little Ghost has a sad ending because Ke and Kien must say goodbye. I like that Ke finds closure before his departure, but he doesn't spend enough time with Kien for my liking.

Solid artistry

The series has solid production values and looks dreamy in many scenes. I also like that it adds weird fantasy elements with magical abilities and mythical lore. The quirkiness is fun!

74%

My Little Ghost has creative ideas and quirky supernatural hijinks. The leads give great performances during emotional moments. Yet, the storylines are cliched and the romance lacks chemistry.

BL Tropes

After watching a bunch of Vietnamese BL dramas, I see a pattern. The same five tropes show up again and again: homophobia, cheating, drunk or non-consensual sex, money or debt issues, and some kind of serious illness. Every single series I have seen so far has included at least one of these cliches. Now, I wanna keep score and see which drama breaks free from all five.

Homophobia

Although we don't find out until the end of the story, Ke's homophobic parents are the main reason why he took his own life. Sadly, they change their views only when it's too late.

Cheating

There isn't any cheating drama. Vu broke up with Ke after the parental pressure became too much. Later, Ke is heartbroken when Vu moved abroad and didn't seem to care about their relationship.

Consent Issues

In Episode 6, Ke suddenly kisses Kien to revive him from the dead. THE KISS OF LIFE!!! The consent here is iffy, but to be fair, Ke did it to save Kien's life. The other intimate moments are all mutual.

Debt Issues

Kien is poor and struggles financially. One of the reasons why he moved into the haunted house is because of its low rent. With that said, he never gets into any serious debt.

Health Issues

After abandoning her son at the orphanage for years, Kien's mom suddenly shows up because she needs a bone marrow transplant from him. Kien agrees to do it, which almost costs him his life.
