Memory in the Letter – Series Review & Episode Guide

Memory in the Letter is a Thai BL series about two men who meet and communicate through a magical mirror.

Memory in the Letter is a Thai BL series about two men who communicate with each other through a magical mirror. After cutting ties with his father, the main character moves into a dorm to live alone. Surprisingly, he can see and talk to another man on the other side of a mysterious mirror. The protagonist soon realizes they exist in parallel universes. Despite their unusual situation, they form a close bond that defies space and time.

I appreciate the imagination from Memory in the Letter, which creates a sweet love story involving a magical mirror. The couple overcomes their physical barrier and forms a genuine bond. The emotional music and the sincere acting enrich this drama's enchanting atmosphere. However, the plot isn't executed smoothly. It rushes the relationship arc at the start. A massive twist at the end also complicates the romance too much.

Plot

Aksorn and Songjam meet each other in a mirror.

Aksorn is an aspiring writer who lied to his father about studying engineering at university. Behind his back, he secretly pursued literature instead. When his father eventually found out, he was furious. During an intense argument, Aksorn's father insists that a writing career has no future. After exchanging harsh words, the father tells his son to leave the house. A heartbroken Aksorn moves out of the family home.

After the light fades, Aksorn is shocked to see that his reflection in the mirror has changed. Instead of his image, he sees a man standing in a different room. Aksorn panics. The other man, Songjam, also reacts with fear. Neither of them understands what is happening. At first, they are confused about why someone else appears in their mirror. Over time, Aksorn and Songjam realize they are living in parallel universes. Aksorn exists in one timeline, while Songjam belongs to another. Songjam's world appears different, containing vintage technology and a less modern setting.

Aksorn struggles to accept there is a man in his mirror reflection. Unsure of what to do, he vaguely explains the situation to Kyo, a regular customer at the bookstore where he works part-time. Kyo, an intelligent doctor, introduces him to the idea of parallel universes. With a knowing smile, he says, "Quantum physics is similar to love. Difficult to understand but romantic." Following Kyo's advice, Aksorn becomes more open-minded about Songjam. Instead of reacting with fear, he gets to know him better. Before long, the two strangers befriend each other.

At first, Aksorn and Songjam keep their conversations light and casual. They talk about their meals or favourite music. There's also some awkwardness when they need to change clothes in their rooms, so they cover the mirror with a towel for privacy. Later, Aksorn returns home to collect some personal belongings but ends up in another heated argument with his father. Their fight brings up memories of Aksorn's mother, who died tragically, a painful subject for both of them.

Aksorn is upset by his father's harsh words and returns to the dorm in tears. Songjam senses his distress and comforts him from the other side of the mirror. He plays music and invites Aksorn to dance, lifting his companion's spirits. After that night, the two grow even closer. However, Aksorn is disturbed when he comes across an online story that eerily mirrors his life. The plot describes events between him and Songjam, even mentioning their dance. Aksorn investigates the mysterious author, who may have answers to what is happening with the mirror.

Memory in the Letter Review

Review

Drama Review Score: 7.4

B-
Aksorn and Songjam almost kiss.

Memory in the Letter has such an intriguing concept. The leads can only talk to each other through a magical mirror, so their relationship relies on conversations and emotions rather than physical moments. Most BL couples go on dates, travel, or have exciting adventures, but this pair must stay in one place. The challenge is making their bond feel meaningful without traditional romance scenes. Creating a love story with limited interactions requires lots of imagination, and I admire how unique this series is.

Although Memory in the Letter has a creative premise, it rushes Aksorn and Songjam's relationship. Considering their bizarre situation and how little they know each other, I was confused when these two strangers suddenly became friends. The story skips a crucial part of their early bond, making the romance less convincing. Another issue is the lack of information about Songjam's parallel universe. I was curious about the differences between the two worlds, yet the series remains vague. Aksorn also barely asks about Songjam's life, showing that he doesn't understand his love interest on a deeper level.

If you can overlook Aksorn and Songjam's clumsy introduction, their interactions become genuinely sweet. There are charming scenes, like Aksorn decorating his room for a celebration with Songjam. In another exchange, they press their hands against the mirror, longing to touch each other. My favourite is when they stargaze together. The mirror keeps the couple apart, yet the story finds clever ways for them to overcome the physical barrier. The most magical moments happen when the series gets creative as Aksorn and Songjam grow closer despite their distance.

Aksorn's actor (Beck) is a cutie and seems endearing. With more on-screen experience, he can smooth out some of his shakier moments. I like his co-star (Parky), especially the sweetness in his smile and the sincerity in his eyes. He conveys emotions beautifully through his expressions. Kyo's actor (Can) looks remarkably telegenic. He's so handsome that it'd be a waste for him not to appear in front of a camera more often. I also enjoy the opening song, which he performs with Parky. The music swells with emotion and matches the tone of the story perfectly.

Episode 5 changes the plot dramatically. A BL drama about a magical mirror already seems bizarre, but this episode pushes the fantasy elements further with an even bigger twist. As the events unfolded, I felt mindfucked. What the hell!? I was laughing my ass off at the sheer audacity of it all. Once the shock wore off, I realized I actually liked this twist. I admire the storyteller's imagination for stretching the space-time continuum. Memory in the Letter impressed me from the start due to its creativity. I remain supportive even when the series takes a wildly unexpected turn.

After watching hundreds of predictable BL dramas, I appreciate the unusual ending from Memory in the Letter. However, this plot twist complicates Aksorn and Songjam's romance. While they had some sweet moments, their connection never seemed that strong. Then, the story dropped a massive bombshell, making me even more unsure about their relationship. Sadly, I didn't feel the romantic sparks when the couple reunited in the finale. As the series ends, I'm left with mixed emotions. Memory in the Letter is full of imagination, but not everything worked for me.

Summary

Creative story

Memory in the Letter has a fascinating concept. The idea of two people falling in love through a magical mirror is imaginative, even if the story doesn't execute everything smoothly.

Enchanting romance

Aksorn and Songjam's relationship develops too quickly. Once they know each other better, I enjoy their cute exchanges. While not the most passionate romance, this couple is sweet and genuine.

Sincere acting

Aksorn's actor (Beck) seems charming, although he has a few shaky moments during the dramatic scenes. His co-star (Parky) conveys emotions well, especially through the sincerity in his eyes.

Happy ending

Memory in the Letter has a happy ending as Aksorn and Songjam reunite in the finale. However, there's a massive plot twist! The story takes a wild turn, which complicates the romance too much.

Dreamy artistry

I enjoy the dreamy aesthetics, especially during the couple's enchanting romantic moments together. I also like the opening song, which matches the story's swelling emotions.

74%

Memory in the Letter is full of imagination, creating a sweet and genuine romance from an unusual situation. However, the story isn't perfectly executed. A few parts feel rushed or leave me skeptical.
