Mr. Cinderella 2 – Series Review & Episode Guide

Mr. Cinderella 2 is the sequel to the Vietnamese BL series, Mr. Cinderella.

Mr. Cinderella 2 is the sequel to the Vietnamese BL series, continuing the romance between a doctor and a reformed gangster. The second season begins years later after the leads have gotten married. They live in a luxurious home, enjoying domestic bliss. However, the protagonist's brother returns to reclaim his inheritance on the family property. This wily villain has a secret agenda and desperately wants to break up the couple.

My expectations for Mr. Cinderella 2 were nonexistent, but this awful sequel still manages to sink to a new low. The illogical story prioritizes idiotic twists and sensationalist melodrama over any semblance of realism. It loves perpetuating offensive tropes, toxic stereotypes, and morally depraved behaviour. The characters are reduced to evil caricatures without substance. While the lead actors are handsome, they can't salvage this vile BL series.

Khoa and Dung are a happily married couple. Dung used to be a gangster from a rough walk of life. His life changed for the better after meeting Khoa, who provided free boarding and helped him settle down. They fell in love despite their class differences. Dung even proposed to Khoa, solidifying their relationship. They live together in a luxurious house that Khoa's adoptive parents left behind after passing away. Khoa and Dung enjoy their marital bliss. Their sparks haven't diminished since getting married.

Dung works as a barista at O2 Coffee. He has a good relationship with Tuan, his boss. They like to joke around and confide in each other about personal issues. Besides his job at the coffee shop, Dung also does the housework. He cooks delicious meals for his partner. Tuan provides Dung with an allowance to help him with his expenses. However, Dung lives thriftily and doesn't spend much. He's financially independent without relying on his partner's income for support.

Khoa works as a doctor. He used to run a private practice. Currently, he's employed at a hospital to work in the surgical department. Another surgeon joined his workplace recently. Khang is a young doctor in his late twenties. Due to the hospital's construction, the two coworkers must share an office for now. After working together for a while, Khoa finds Khang quite arrogant. Khang likes bragging about his achievements. One of his success stories is a skilled procedure where he helped a patient recover his arm after a traffic accident.

Dung and Khoa are disturbed by an unexpected arrival. Khoa's brother, Thanh, suddenly arrives home after a six-year absence. Thanh is a former pianist living in Thailand, but he has decided to move back to Vietnam. He grew up with Khoa as brothers. However, Thanh is the biological child, whereas Khoa is adopted. Their parents have left the house inheritance to Thanh instead of Khoa. After his return, he wants to reclaim the property. Thanh doesn't care about evicting his brother and his lover from their home.

Khoa and Thanh share a complicated history. They used to be in love. Despite never consummating their relationship, they discussed spending their future together. Their parents opposed this taboo romance. They sent Thanh to a boarding school in Thailand to separate the couple. While living overseas, Thanh had a car accident and lost functional use of his arm, ruining his musical ambitions. Incidentally, it's the same case Dr. Khang worked on. Since the accident, Thanh resents Khoa for destroying his life. He wants to exact revenge.

Mr. Cinderella 2 Review

Review

Drama Review Score: 4.3

D-
Dung and Khoa kiss in the bedroom.

Going into Mr. Cinderella 2, I had low expectations. Time has made me forget about the first season from two years ago, but my review was staunchly negative. I keep an open mind since some BL sequels surprise me with their improvements. Sadly, this series is worse than anticipated. It contains everything I loathe about the original drama, from the illogical plots to the problematic behaviour. The new season of Mr. Cinderella pushes even more toxic tropes to the forefront, revelling in its moral depravity.

Incest is a prominent plot in Mr. Cinderella 2. While one of the siblings is adopted, that still doesn't remove the ickiness from the taboo romance. In addition, the series likes to provoke viewers with malicious scandals. The characters constantly breach moral boundaries, acting as outrageous and offensive as possible. They indulge in lots of predatory misconduct, from sexual assault to drugging unknowing victims. Mr. Cinderella 2 handles these sinister storylines without any sensitivity or tact. It gets a sick thrill from exploiting trauma for cheap entertainment.

A dark, gritty storyline can be compelling when written well. Yet, Mr. Cinderella 2 is laughably idiotic, incoherent, and illogical. The bizarre plot makes little sense as it unfolds, particularly anything related to the hospital. The outlandish melodrama defies all semblance of realism. Furthermore, the villains are over-the-top caricatures. They have convoluted origin stories, cause reckless chaos, and contradict themselves with their muddled motivations. These overpowered antagonists can endanger others and get away with heinous crimes, suffering zero consequences.

Mr. Cinderella 2 begins with Khoa & Dung as a married couple. While their domestic bliss is sweet, most exchanges revolve around sexual innuendos. Their bond doesn't develop beyond jokes about horniness. Later, the series focuses too much on the evil brother, losing sight of its love story. You expect a BL drama to revolve around the leads. Instead, the spotlight is on the obnoxious villain who undermines their relationship. His scheming causes an ugly conflict between the couple in the last few episodes. Their hostility sours my opinion of this romance.

Both leads are handsome and make a physically attractive couple. Dung's actor (Ba Vinh) has paired with many screen partners throughout his BL career. Minh Thao is probably the best looking out of all his costars. They also share decent chemistry, even if the series only has a few intimate encounters. Regrettably, their connection is wasted on this crappy love story with bland protagonists. They have watered-down personalities, like a shadow of their former selves in the first season. Most scenes suffer from clunky writing, limiting the performers' ability to shine.

Mr. Cinderella 2 has clean-looking visuals that are noticeably better than the studio's past projects. However, the hospital scenes feel inauthentic and have a low-budget appearance. The characters sit inside a fake office, pretending to work at a clinic. Likewise, some performances seem phony. Thanh's actor is too theatrical, almost like a pantomime villain. Worst of all, the storytelling is disastrous. The plot unravels into foolish nonsense, concluding as ridiculously as it started. Overall, there's little I enjoy about Mr. Cinderella 2. It's a nasty, offensive piece of trash.

Summary

Immoral story

Mr. Cinderella 2 is idiotic, incoherent, and illogical. Most plots make little sense and lack realism. There's also a lot of sinister drama, including incest, sexual assault, and drugging unknowing victims.

Offensive romance

The series focuses too much on the evil brother and his antagonism instead of establishing the love story. The couple's hostility in the last few episodes sours my opinion of them, leaving a bad taste.

Charmless acting

Both handsome leads make an attractive couple and share decent chemistry. Yet, their bland roles hardly allow them to shine. Thanh's actor is too theatrical and seems like a pantomime villain.

Sad ending

Mr. Cinderella has a sad ending where Dung & Khoa can't overcome the conflict after Thanh sabotages their relationship. The villains also get away with heinous crimes, suffering no consequences.

Clean artistry

The series has clean visuals, demonstrating an improved quality over the studio's past projects. However, the hospital scenes look too fake and low-budget, taking me out of immersion.

43%

Mr. Cinderella 2 is a problematic BL series perpetuating offensive tropes and morally depraved behaviour. Everything about this story is absurd, from the illogical narrative to the theatrical melodrama.

Episode Reviews

Episode 1

Aww, the proposal scene is nice. Dung's actor looks so dreamy in that outfit. I can't get over the scenes where they're supposed to be in working a "hospital". The fakeness takes me out of immersion.

Episode 2

Thanh's tragic backstory is so laughably absurd. The whole brother romance feels yucky, even if Khoa is adopted. It's weird how Khang lives at the house with the other characters. Should he even be there?

Episode 3

Thanh takes up too much focus. I'm not interested in him or his nasty melodrama. His villain origin story is just so bizarre. The actor is also too theatrical, coming across like a pantomime villain.

Episode 4

The behind-the-scenes footage of the kiss is even better! These two leads make such a telegenic couple, but I wish they were in a different love story. I hate the relationship drama with the evil brother.

Episode 5

All the drama in this episode feels so contrived, from the couple's argument to the mind control drug. Thanh drugging his adopted brother to take advantage of him is icky on multiple levels.

Episode 6

Khang is as morally depraved as Thanh. He jeopardizes a patient's life to help Thanh fulfill his wicked revenge arc. I hate all the arguing and scheming. The drama over the mind-control drug is dumb.

Episode 7

What do Thanh and Khang hope to achieve with their evil actions!? These over-the-top villains drag everyone into their vortex of hatred. The story sucks, I hate the characters, and the drama isn't fun.

Episode 8

Thanh and Khang getting away with their heinous crimes is infuriating. The story spends too long on the evil melodrama. It should've focused more on Dung & Khoa rebuilding their bond.

  1. I don’t like the way O2 productions are going. For me their high point has been Love Bill – not flawless, but one of my favourite series which I rewatch. This light-hearted amusing story which moves effortlessly into tragedy works for me. The acting from Ba Vinh and Tran le Duc is faultless, and domestic details and the beautiful semi-rural setting are the background to a sensitive and slow-burning love story. Mr Cinderella 2 has moved so far away from this. Sad.

  2. I dropped Mr Cinderella after 3 episodes with no regret- I will skip this one!
    Thanks for warning…..errrrr review:)
