You Want Some? – Series Review & Episode Guide

You Want Some is a Korean BL series about two university students competing against each other.

You Want Some? is a Korean BL series about two university students competing to seduce each other. The main character is annoyed that girls constantly reject his confessions. He realizes they are all interested in a popular classmate with a reputation as a ladies' man. His rival claims he can make anyone fall in love with him, including the skeptical protagonist. They challenge one another in a playful game of flirtation.

Like a classic romcom with a BL twist, You Want Some delivers a lighthearted love story. Since the fast-paced narrative moves quickly, some parts may feel too rushed or disjointed. The viewing experience also suffers because the drama is filmed vertically. Even so, this charming series delights us with many cute and playful relationship moments. Plus, the charismatic lead actor can handle comedic material and romantic encounters persuasively.

Plot

Jaehon and Sunwoo are university rivals.

Jaeheon is a university senior who has one semester left before graduation. Despite his academic achievements, he struggles in his love life. Every time he confesses to a girl, he gets rejected. His friends, Taekyung and Namsoo, point out that his main rival is Sunwoo, the campus playboy with a notorious reputation as a ladies' man. According to them, all the girls Jaeheon pursues are more interested in Sunwoo. Taekyung even advises him to give up on romance and focus on completing his final school project.

Jaeheon isn't close to Sunwoo and can't understand why he's so popular. Frustrated, he calls his rival names like "bastard" and "playboy" while out with his friends. Sunwoo is nearby at the restaurant and overhears the insults. Confident in his charm, Sunwoo boasts about his flirtation skills. Sunwoo claims he could seduce anyone, even Jaeheon, if he wanted to. Skeptical, Jaeheon dismisses the idea, but Sunwoo ups the ante by challenging him to a dare. They agree to see who can make the other fall in love first. The loser must grant the winner any wish he wants.

If Jaeheon wins the dare, he plans to ask Sunwoo to help him with his graduation piece. He needs to find a partner for his class project, and Sunwoo fits the requirements. However, Jaeheon has no experience with flirting and doesn't know how to seduce his rival. Amused by his awkwardness, Sunwoo playfully suggests they kiss to see if it sparks any feelings. He even proposes they score each other on their kissing skills. Jaeheon is startled by the idea and refuses immediately. He finds the suggestion absurd.

Sunwoo is amused when Jaeheon refuses to kiss him, joking that it must be because Jaeheon is bad at it and lacks confidence. Triggered by the teasing, Jaeheon impulsively kisses Sunwoo to shut him up. Although he feels proud during the moment, regret quickly sets in. A panicked Jaeheon struggles to process what happened and can't believe he kissed another guy to prove a point. Confused by his actions, he turns to the internet, searching for answers about guys kissing to make sense of his feelings.

While Jaeheon feels awkward, Sunwoo remains unfazed by what happened. The kiss breaks the ice between them. The two spend more time together, sitting next to each other in class and exchanging contact information. They begin communicating via texts. Some messages are playful, like Sunwoo teasing that he's winning the dare. Others are casual, sharing funny moments or random thoughts. Jaeheon feels excited whenever he chats with Sunwoo. His friends even tease him, saying he texts like someone in love, though Jaeheon denies it. Deep down, he wonders about his feelings for his rival.

You Want Some Review

Review

Drama Review Score: 7.7

B-
Jaeheon and Sunwoo share their first kiss.

You Want Some begins with a so-called competition. The leads try to seduce each other, and the loser is whoever falls in love first. To me, the premise seems slightly baffling. I don't understand why the two rivals would agree to this challenge without questioning its purpose or intent. Aren't you guys just flirting while pretending it's for a bet? Early on, I held to my skepticism. The relationship felt contrived, as if the couple only spent time together due to a plot device. It took a while before the series won me over.

Eventually, You Want Some finds its groove as a lighthearted romantic comedy. The enemies-to-lovers journey unfolds with lots of humour and charm. It adds a funny joke here, a flirtatious moment there, and follows up with a touch of juicy relationship drama. The story continues this delightful rhythm, gaining momentum with each episode. Soon, the characters blur the line between romance and rivalry. From amusing banter to exhilarating kisses, the series captures the playful spirit of a classic BL romcom. Surprisingly, I'm enjoying You Want Some more than I expected.

You Want Some makes every second count, delivering a fast-paced plot that wastes no time and never lingers. The couple's relationship develops quickly, while a few curveballs will keep you guessing what happens next. The series is divided into fifty brief episodes, each lasting one to two minutes. This format ensures the pacing remains snappy. However, the story can feel rushed and disjointed, skipping over details that a longer drama might explore thoroughly. Although You Want Some does well to pack so much into a short narrative, it would've benefited from more time.

Jaeheon's actor (Lee Min Wook) is a revelation. This handsome lead brings immense charisma to the role, and his comedic timing is excellent. A good-looking guy who can be as funny as him is such an appealing combination. With his expressive face, he endears you when acting flustered or awkward. Yet, he can be effortlessly suave and leave you swooning in romantic moments. The performer exudes untapped star power. BL studios should be fighting hard to cast him in their next drama. If you give this heartthrob a bigger platform, many fans will gravitate toward him.

You Want Some limits its appeal by filming the drama vertically. Unlike traditional widescreens, this series confines the visuals to a narrow frame, making it harder to establish settings or capture body language. The awkward viewing experience may discourage fans from watching the series. However, the camera work does add some flair to the scenes. Fast zooms, dramatic swerves, and rapid cuts help maintain the story's energetic rhythm. Despite these techniques, I still can't stand vertically filmed BL dramas. The format will always incur a hefty penalty in my reviews.

You Want Some has a happy ending, but the final arc feels too rushed. Jaeheon and Sunwoo are meant to enter a new phase of their relationship, yet there isn't enough time to explore this plot in depth. It must summarize what happens instead of letting viewers see the actual scenes and experience the storyline. Although the last stretch could have been better, I still enjoyed my experience with the series. Cheerful and charming, You Want Some offers a cute love story that makes me giddy as a BL fan. It follows the winning formula of a successful romcom.
