Two Husbands One Wife is a Japanese drama about a couple who brings another man into their relationship. The main character wants to marry her boyfriend, but he isn't ready for that commitment. As a solution, he proposes a three-person marriage to share responsibilities and take care of one another. When the protagonist suggests the idea to her ex-boyfriend, he feels skeptical. After spending time together, he agrees to join them.

Like a friendly introduction to throupling, Two Husbands One Wife examines unconventional relationships thoughtfully. It touches upon many interesting topics you won't find elsewhere. The storytelling potential is endless. However, I'm skeptical of how the characters feel about one another. Their chemistry isn't convincing. While the two male leads show affection, their random attraction seems more like a plot device.

Plot

Takuzo, Shinpei, and Mia are a throuple.

Mia works as a real estate agent at a small local firm. She's dating Shinpei, a younger dancer. His street performances have a small following, though his income is unstable. Mia supports him and attends his shows whenever she can. The couple lives together and appears happily in love.

Mia's friend Yuki recently married a woman. Recently, Japan has legalized all types of diverse marriages, including those for same-sex couples. After attending the wedding, Mia feels inspired and talks to Shinpei about marriage. Shinpei admits he isn't ready to settle down yet. He doesn't feel emotionally or financially prepared to support her. Instead, Shinpei suggests an alternative plan: a three-person marriage. If someone else can help support Mia, he's open to the idea.

Mia feels upset after Shinpei suggests a three-person marriage. She doesn't take the idea seriously. Around this time, she gets a message from her ex-boyfriend, Takuzo. His rabbit, Pakkun, has just passed away. Mia helped look after the pet when they were dating, so Takuzo invites her to say goodbye. She agrees to visit, bringing Shinpei along with her. Her plan is to flirt with Takuzo to make Shinpei jealous and push him toward marriage.

Mia and Shinpei arrive at Takuzo's apartment. Her plan to flirt with Takuzo and make Shinpei jealous backfires. Instead, the two men get along unexpectedly well and find plenty to talk about. Shinpei even jokes around, asking Mia why she broke up with such a great guy. Annoyed, she says Takuzo was too clingy and undateable. Later, Takuzo breaks down in tears as Pakkun's death hits him, reminding him that he's alone now.

Shinpei makes a suggestion to Mia. He wants to try a three-person marriage with Takuzo. He argues that it would be three times the fun, and each person would only handle a third of the responsibilities. Mia agrees to the idea. When they present the plan to Takuzo, he hesitates and declines it. Later, Takuzo struggles at a speed dating event, feeling awkward and lonely. When Mia approaches him again, Takuzo changes his mind and agrees to try the three-person marriage.

Two Husbands One Wife Review

Review

Drama Review Score: 7.5

B-
Takuzo and Shinpei get intimate.

As the title suggests, Two Husbands One Wife revolves around a throuple. Honestly, I haven't seen many stories about these unconventional relationships. Most BL romances focus on two men, not three of 'em. For me, this series has been super enlightening. It explores the topic extensively, showing the pros and cons of having more than one soulmate. It highlights issues I haven't considered, such as the legal complications. Two Husbands One Wife feels like a friendly introduction to throupling.

Two Husbands One Wife captured my interest with its unique premise. How does a throuple start? Why enter a three-person relationship? I enjoyed learning about each character's motivation, whether it came from loneliness, insecurity, or the need to please a partner. As they live together, I liked seeing them connect over their similarities or clash over their differences. A throuple's dynamics are more complex than a regular couple, offering plenty of storytelling potential. Two Husbands, One Wife never feels boring because it's working with such interesting material.

My problem with this drama is that I don't believe in the throuple's feelings for one another. Initially, I was skeptical of Shinpei's reason for wanting a three-person marriage. Confused why Mia agreed to it. Bewildered after Takuzo accepted the proposal. I tried not to overthink it and let the relationship unfold naturally. As the story goes on, I remain unconvinced. Yes, the trio gets along. But no, they don't seem close enough to get married. The series insists they share a deep bond and forces them into a throuple, even though their connection feels awfully contrived.

The BL subplot starts midway, so you must be patient as Shinpei and Takuzo grow closer. After a little flirting here and a bit of physical intimacy there, Mia is shocked by what the two men are doing behind her back. (Narrator's voice: "They're doing each other.") I give their romantic scenes a passing grade, but no high marks. The pairing feels kinda random, and I'm not sure why they're attracted to each other. My inner skeptic thinks the story pushes them together only as a plot device. Also, Takuzo has more chemistry with his female coworker than with Shinpei.

Shinpei's actor (Taiga Suzuki) looks adorable! His performance is fine, but my focus is on how his shaggy hair falls over his eyes in a dreamy way. BL fans may recognize his co-star (Kodai Asaka) from Cherry Magic, though I enjoy him more in Two Husbands One Wife. He plays a quirky character and captures the neurotic side well. While the female lead (Aki Asakura) is lively, I don't have strong feelings about her. I actually like Tenma's actress (Karen Miyama) more. Even with a minor role, she leaves a bigger impression on me due to her eccentric charm.

In the ending, Two Husbands One Wife embraces the mantra of "Fuck it! We do what we want!" On the one hand, the series concludes without resolving the loose ends or addressing the many impracticalities of a three-person marriage. On the other hand, I adore the story's messages of living spontaneously. Let's stop worrying and accept that we don't know what the future holds. Overall, Two Husbands One Wife is an interesting story that helps me understand throuples better. Despite some unbelievable moments in the plot, I'm mostly satisfied with the drama.

Summary

Interesting story

Two Husbands One Wife explores a throuple's relationship. It explores many topics, examining the pros & cons of having more than one soulmate. There's so much storytelling potential.

Unconvincing romance

I'm skeptical of the throuple's feelings for one another. Are they close enough for marriage? Hmm, I dunno. The BL content is serviceable, but this subplot doesn't get high marks from me.

Quirky acting

Oh, Shinpei's actor (Taiga Suzuki) is a cutie! His co-star (Kodai Asaka) captures Takuzo's neurotic side well. However, he shares more chemistry with Tenma than with the other two leads.

Happy ending

Two Husbands One Wife has a happy ending that serves major "fuck it!" energy. While the finale doesn't resolve the loose ends, I like the story's message of living boldly and worrying less.

Warm artistry

The production is modest yet effective, focusing more on the characters than on flashy visuals. Most scenes carry a warm, cozy tone that suits the story's vibes.

75%

Two Husbands One Wife is an interesting drama about throuples, like a friendly introduction to unconventional relationships. However, I'm skeptical of the characters' feelings for one another.
