Blessing of Love – Series Review & Episode Guide

Meteor, also known as Dao Tok, is a university student who recently died in his apartment. Before passing away, he had a major falling out with his friends, Ning and Boat. Overcome with grief, he took his own life. After his death, Meteor became a wandering spirit. A new tenant, Mew, moves into the apartment soon after. He doesn't know its history or that Meteor is still there.

Korn and Gym are two mysterious angels who oversee the apartment. Korn always dresses in black, while Gym wears white. They offer Meteor a second chance at life. Meteor can be revived if he convinces Mew to fall in love with him. If Meteor fails, he will get banished to the afterlife. He has thirty days to complete his mission. There's also one strict rule. He cannot leave the room, or his spirit will disappear forever.

Meteor has no idea how to complete his task. At first, Mew cannot even see him. They must spend enough time together for Mew to develop a supernatural vision. Meteor watches Mew in his daily life and silently judges his messy habits. However, he's impressed by Mew's nurturing side. Mew takes good care of his potted plant, watering it and talking to it with care.

One day, Mew finally gains the ability to see Meteor. He panics and tries to protect himself with a talisman, but it has no effect. Scared, Mew runs away from the apartment. After a while, he calms down and returns. Mew realizes that Meteor means no harm. Over time, he becomes willing to learn more about his roommate. As they spend more time together, Mew listens to Meteor's story, and a connection develops.

Blessing of Love begins with a quirky premise. A spirit gets a second chance at life if he can seduce his partner. This unusual scenario piques my interest, making me wonder how the plot will progress. The story also has fun with supernatural hijinks in the first episode, such as the lead using his power to play pranks. Not everything is perfectly executed. Some parts could be rewritten for more clarity or humour. Even so, I see early potential in Blessing of Love and want to give this imaginative series a chance to wow me.

The second episode has a funny opening scene when the leads meet for the first time. Mew's comedic overreaction to Meteor makes me laugh. Sadly, the rest of the series doesn't keep up this momentum. I expected the characters to bond meaningfully as the spirit and his human companion get to know each other better. Instead, the plot drifts away to irrelevant scenes that aren't interesting to watch. Almost no progress was made to establish Mew and Meteor's relationship, so viewers can't be emotionally invested in their budding romance. Blessing of Love focuses on the wrong storylines and suffers as a result.

Instead of recovering, the third episode ruins the narrative momentum even more. It focuses too much on Meteor's backstory and devotes half the time to explaining why he died. The entire sequence is poorly written, boring me with unpleasant love triangle drama. Please give us the short version of his death and move on! For a miniseries like Blessing of Love, the storyteller must learn to be concise. After three episodes, I'm also frustrated that Meteor and Mew's relationship has barely developed. It doesn't feel genuine when they hug because they're practically strangers.

I like Mew's actor (Pun), who has a charismatic spark. However, he's given limited material in this series with an underdeveloped character. If his agency can highlight him in better projects, there's untapped star power waiting to shine. His co-star (Chechin) does a decent job. For a young actor like him, he'll continue to improve with different roles and more screen experience. As for the couple's chemistry, it's hard to judge based on their small handful of exchanges together. The fault lies more with the storyteller for not giving them enough bonding scenes.

Blessing of Love comes from a smaller, less resourceful studio. Understandably, it lacks polish compared to the industry standard. The filming mainly occurs in a small room, so there isn't much visual interest. The production team still tries to work within limitations, such as using lighting to set the ambiance. However, the series uses a hard-sell approach to product placement. While I understand these advertisements help with the funding, the scenes at the spa clinic feel clunkily inserted. The heavy-handed marketing occasionally breaks my immersion in the story.

In the finale, Blessing of Love gets back on track after losing focus during the middle stretch. It resolves Meteor's storyline happily with a feel-good ending. I adore the last scene as Mew walks into his room in slow motion and plants a confident kiss on his partner. Oh, his swagger is smooth as hell! Unfortunately, the emotional impact falls flat due to a lacklustre buildup. The series fails to develop a meaningful relationship, so I don't care about this couple or their reunion. Blessing of Love squanders its potential and leaves me feeling nothing about what I just watched.
