Are the Sexy Buttocks Not Good? – Series Review

Ainosuke Hisaki is a 23-year-old barista. One day, he spends his subway ride scrolling through a gay dating app. He isn't subtle about it. His phone screen is a parade of shirtless guys for everyone nearby to see. Unfortunately, one creepy passenger notices. The pervert recognizes the app, sneaks up behind Ainosuke, and suddenly grabs his butt. Ainosuke freezes because he has no idea how to react. Out of everyone on the train, only one passenger steps in to help him.

Enter Okumi, a sharply dressed businessman who's almost 40. He scares off the groper and quickly gets Ainosuke out of there. Once they're safely off the subway, Okumi gives the younger guy some advice. Maybe don't advertise your gay dating app to the entire train next time. Other men can recognize it easily, especially if they use the same app. How does Okumi know? Well, he obviously used the app in the past. Before leaving, this helpful stranger gives Ainosuke his contact information. Cute younger guys are exactly Okumi's type. If Ainosuke ever wants a casual fling, he knows who to call.

Ainosuke heads to work at the coffee shop, where he surprisingly runs into Okumi again. Okumi is delighted by the coincidence and properly introduces himself. After learning Ainosuke's name, he assigns him a cute nickname: Ai-chan. From then on, Okumi becomes a regular customer, visiting the coffee shop almost every day. He keeps ordering drinks from Ai-chan just for an excuse to interact with him. His persistence pays off. Ainosuke may be sexually inexperienced, but he starts having some very raunchy fantasies about his older admirer.

One night, Okumi visits the coffee shop around the same time Ainosuke finishes his shift. They chat outside the store, where Okumi asks whether Ai-chan has matched with anyone on the dating app. When Ainosuke admits he hasn't found anybody yet, Okumi makes a bold proposition. Why keep swiping when there's a perfectly good man right in front of you? They head back to Okumi's apartment for a steamy one-night stand. Ainosuke doesn't have much sexual experience, so Okumi is more than happy to take the lead.

The couple have sex. There's plenty of sensual touching, with a lot of attention paid to Ai-chan's famously perky butt. Ainosuke feels amazing after their hookup. However, Okumi stops contacting him for a while. Ainosuke gets the wrong idea and assumes the older man only wanted a one-night stand. Then, they run into each other again. Okumi explains that he wasn't ghosting Ai-chan. He was on a business trip. Now that he's back, he's interested in picking up where they left off. They sleep together again. Soon, their booty call turns into a regular arrangement. The two keep meeting up for some very enthusiastic physical intimacy.

Meanwhile, Ainosuke has applied for a new office job. He shows up for the interview and gets the shock of his life when he sees Okumi. Surprise! His booty call is the president of Apis Corporation. Ainosuke turns to his best friend, Teramuchi, for advice. At first, they agree he should avoid the awkwardness and apply somewhere else. That plan changes once Ainosuke receives an actual job offer. Okumi insists he didn't pull any strings because HR made the hiring decision. In the end, Ainosuke accepts the position. He starts working as a new employee at Okumi's company.

You gotta have a sense of humour to enjoy Are the Sexy Buttocks Not Good. Some grumpy bastards might skip this BL drama just because of that ridiculous title. Others will feel offended that every episode is filled with lowbrow sexual comedy. Sex is everywhere! Even if we don't see any nudity, the characters still get surprisingly horny. If dirty jokes make you clutch your pearls, you're gonna hate this series. But if you like giggling at perverted nonsense, Are the Sexy Buttocks Not Good can be hilariously naughty.

The story isn't deep. Then again, I don't think any of us saw the words "sexy buttocks" and expected a highly intellectual BL drama. Early on, Okumi fits the dirty-old-man stereotype almost too perfectly. His grubby hands are all over that young twink's body. For the first few episodes, their relationship consists of making out and having sex. I'm not against the raunchiness. Please, this is BL Watcher. But after a while, I wondered whether the series had any depth. Does the entire story revolve around Ai-chan's hot slice of ass? Based on all the mindless smut, I assumed the plot would never develop into anything worthwhile.

Thankfully, the series gets more serious. I like the couple's chat in Episode 3. Okumi opens up about his late wife and admits, "I didn't have the luxury to figure out if I was gay or bi." Wait, that's actually an insightful line! He also visits her grave. This quiet scene feels so humanizing and gives his character emotional depth. The later episodes focus on interesting topics, such as the couple's age gap and different life priorities. Nothing gets super complicated, but it's still enough to raise my opinion of the series. Here we go! This silly BL drama has some substance beneath the smut.

Many of you aren't gonna like this couple. Ainosuke is in his early 20s, while Okumi is pushing 40. Ooh boy… That huge age gap will ruffle some feathers. The workplace dynamic is also icky. Why is the company president hooking up with the newest employee? HR would like to have a word with you! Despite all the red flags, I enjoy Ai-chan & Okumi together. These goofballs crack me up with their horny nonsense and weirdly sweet interactions. At first, their connection seems purely physical. Over time, I believe they've grown close and actually care about each other.

I gotta respect Ainosuke's actor (Sho Sakai) for being comfortable with the intimate scenes. BL dramas have gotten pretty risqué over the years, but you still don't see many performers dropping to their knees and sticking their butt in the air. He's a trooper! His co-star (Yuki Kimisawa) also looks suave on camera, especially with that mischievous sparkle in his eyes. Unfortunately, the couple's kissing scenes can get a little sloppy. Both actors also seem better at comedy than heavy drama. Whenever the mood turns serious, you can see some cracks in their performances.

During the finale, Ainosuke's dad gives such a warm response to his son's coming out. His emotional words caught me off guard. Who would've guessed this perverted little BL drama could become so sincere? Just when I thought we were getting sentimental, the last scene is so stupid that I burst out laughing. That's what I love about Are the Sexy Buttocks Not Good. It can be ridiculous one minute and surprisingly sweet the next. I won't pretend the story is deep. The series is still dumb as hell and horny as ever. Even so, I've enjoyed this guilty pleasure more than I expected.
