Although not a BL anime, My New Boss Is Goofy has a heavily coded bromance. The series drops enough hints to let the viewers fantasize about the ambiguous office relationship. While I wish the romance was explicitly stated, I still enjoy the warm, cozy interactions between the leads. Also, this adorable slice-of-life comedy has hilarious jokes. It uses gentle humour as a therapeutic tool to explore emotional abuse and the recovery process.

Plot
Momose is a 26-year-old office worker at Minette, an advertising agency. He is starting his first day of work at this company. Recently, Momose quit his old job at a toxic workplace. His previous employer, Kurono, used to be verbally and physically abusive. Kurono tormented Momose for years, criticizing his subordinate for everything he did. Once, Momose even got kicked for not obeying.
At his new company, the working conditions are much healthier. Momose is assigned to work with Shirosaki, a 34-year-old senior employee. He has been working here for many years. Shirosaki is also one of the interviewers who hired Momose and specifically asked to mentor him. The pair works closely together, creating proposals, attending client meetings, and giving presentations. Shirosaki is an expert in his field. He shares his advertising knowledge with Momose and gives him the opportunities to succeed.
Shirosaki is well-respected and gets along with everyone at work. Despite his high level of competence, he has a surprisingly goofy personality. Shirosaki is clumsy and gets into accidents. He is also ditzy and often makes the wrong assumptions. Shirosaki's silly mistakes are a stark contrast to his serious demeanour. Initially, Momose was nervous about his first day of work. However, his coworker's unintentionally funny antics have helped him relax. Momose finds Shirosaki's goofiness endearing.
Although Momose enjoys his new role, he remains traumatized by his past experiences. Memories of Kurono's emotional abuse arise frequently, causing Momose to doubt himself. After suffering years of torment, this employee has a shattered self-esteem. He feels agitated over innocuous workplace interactions. He also assumes the worst and constantly thinks his employer will criticize him. Momose has developed stomach pain due to feeling stressed.
Shirosaki has observed his younger coworker's tension at work. Unlike Kurono, Shirosaki shows empathy. He talks to Momose gently and never criticizes him. He ensures their relationship is as respectful as possible. Aoyama, the divorced department head, is also a kind colleague who treats his subordinates decently. Since the company morale is so positive, Momose slowly rebuilds his self-confidence. He learns to believe in himself, open up to others, and laugh at the silliness of the workplace.

My New Boss Is Goofy Review
Review
Anime Review Score: 7.7
My New Boss Is Goofy is a funny slice-of-life office comedy. Its lightheartedness is this anime's best selling point. As the title implies, each episode contains playful moments due to the main character's ditzy behaviour. His clumsiness and confusion lead to hilarious everyday scenarios. While the protagonist is the source of many jokes, the series never seems mean-spirited. It manages to be amusing without crossing into insensitivity. My New Boss Is Goofy is ideal for those seeking gentle, heartwarming humour.
Beneath the anime's cheerfulness, there's a tragic backstory. Momose suffered years of emotional and psychological abuse from a toxic employer. He enters his new company with a destroyed self-esteem. Workplace harassment is a significant topic that I'm glad this series highlights. The plot focuses on a meaningful journey as Momose heals from trauma. He rebuilds his confidence, thanks to the kindness of his coworkers. My New Boss Is Goofy also uses humour as a therapeutic tool. Momose finds relief in the comedic moments, overcoming anxiety through laughter.
One of the qualities I most admire about My New Boss Is Goofy is its compassion. This anime celebrates human decency and reinforces positivity. It features empathetic characters who treat each other respectfully. Shirosaki entertains us with his quirky antics, but he's also lovable due to his sweet, earnest personality. He's a supportive mentor who cares about his colleague's feelings. When Momose loses self-assurance, Shirosaki always finds an uplifting response to diffuse the tension. Many heartfelt gestures will make you feel warm, comforted, and hopeful.
My favourite part of the anime is the cat. Every scene with this hilariously moody feline is super adorable! I also like the two leads. Momose tends to overthink and overreact, but his neuroticism is endearing. Likewise, Shirosaki is a delightful oddball who cracks me up with his offbeat habits. Despite his eccentricity, the story balances the characterization and avoids making him too cartoonish. The only mild nuisance is Chief Aoyama. The ongoing gag about his inferiority feels one-note and repetitive. I dislike how he keeps fishing for sympathy from others.
My New Boss Is Goofy is not a BL drama. Momose and Shirosaki never become lovers, but their bromance is heavily coded. The anime drops subtle hints to tease your imagination, from blushing expressions to suggestive dialogue. There's enough material to interpret their dynamic differently and fantasize about the ambiguous couple. The anime also includes a bisexual supporting character who casually confirms his attraction to men. While the representation is appreciated, he doesn't get a romantic storyline. Sadly, the series shies away from same-sex relationships.
Imagine how much better My New Boss Is Goofy would be if Momose and Shirosaki were boyfriends. Make them a couple instead of masking their feelings behind subtext. Too many anime series only tease implied ships and deprive us of actual BL content. My way of protesting is to deny them high review scores until they stop this facade. I also docked points due to the inconsistent visuals. A few episodes look less polished than others. Overall, I still recommend My New Boss Is Goofy. Despite its lack of romance, this anime is entertaining and inspirational.

Episode reviews
Episode 1
So far, I'm not getting any BL vibes from the series. Whoa, getting kicked by your boss is inappropriate!? I'm glad Momose has found a nicer workplace. The letter exchange scene is cute and funny.
Episode 2
"He means the stuffed animal, not me." Now, I'm getting BL vibes from this series, haha. This episode drops far more hints. Aww, the scene on the train is so moving. Shirosaki is such a nice guy!
Episode 3
I love the cat's personality so much. 😺 Every scene is adorable. My favourite is when Hakutou rests in the slippers. Cuteness overload! OMG, the cat's name is like a couple's portmanteau. So sweet!
Episode 4
Wow, we love bisexual representation in anime~ I like how Kinjou casually comes out to his coworkers. Momose always overthinks and misinterprets situations, but I guess that's his character's quirk.
Episode 5
Why is Momose blushing over going on a business trip? LOL. That moment is like BL bait, and I'm eating it up! I like how the train passenger reacts to the characters' funny interactions, hehe~
Episode 6
The jokes about Chief Aoyama's insecurity are repetitive. He seems to be fishing for sympathy. "Good thing you didn't put that hankie under my butt." That's a funny punchline after a sentimental moment!
Episode 7
I like how the leads have moved in. Their domesticity allows for intimate interactions, deepening their bond. "Why don't you buy a house together?" OMG, Kinjou said GAY RIGHTS!!!
Episode 8
Bringing Momose to see your family is like what couples do, right? When Momose or Shirosaki cry, the reaction is funny since it seems over the top. Yet, it's also sweet how they care so much.
Episode 9
I understand Kinjou's character better now. I love how he has a male character as a waifu. Also, I like seeing a positive side to the chief. He can be charismatic instead of being needy all the time.
Episode 10
I prefer a cohesive plot rather than random slice-of-life moments. Kinjou flirts with Shirosaki, but I wish it were a storyline instead of a comedic gag. OMG, the swan boat scene is heavily BL coded!
Episode 11
I adore Hakutou! The button subplot is SO cute. 😽 I like the empowering last scene. It feels like Mamouse has reached a psychological breakthrough. He has overcome his trauma.
Episode 12
I like the empowering message of Mamouse moving out. It shows he isn't codependent on his coworker. He can function on his own. Yet, the BL fan in me wishes they'd confess and live together as a couple!
