The Prosecutor's Proposal is a Korean BL series about the complicated relationship between a prosecutor and an investigator. The main character is assigned to a murder case, but he must work for a notoriously strict prosecutor. Once they start working together, the tension between them becomes obvious. The investigator doesn't understand why there's hostility. Later, he discovers his colleague has a personal grudge against him.
As one of this year's biggest BL hits, The Prosecutor's Proposal deserves its hype. I love that it offers a serious investigation and a spicy gay romance. This combination is rare enough that it makes the series so unique. While the story feels rushed at first, the second half delivers one great episode after another. The couple's relationship is rather complicated, but I like their flirting and steamy scenes. Plus, the talented cast gives strong performances.

Plot
Chaeha begins working with Prosecutor Ju.

Lee Chaeha is a judicial investigator working in the Fine Collection Division at the Danhyeon District Office. His job is to chase people who refuse to pay their legal fines. His latest target is Oh Jayeon, a wealthy businesswoman from the powerful Ohsong family. She's famous for becoming the first female executive in the casino industry. Jayeon isn't happy about Chaeha pestering her for money. She storms into his office and humiliates him in front of everyone. Chaeha is too timid to stand up for himself.
Recently, Chaeha received an unexpected promotion. Prosecutor Ju Taeseon has personally selected him to help with his next investigation. Everyone at the office is shocked. Taeseon has a nasty reputation for being strict, earning him the nickname "psychopath" behind his back. Still, this is a huge career opportunity. Chaeha gets to become a prosecutor's investigator, even though many of his coworkers have more seniority. Naturally, they're jealous that this junior employee gets to skip ahead of them. Even Chaeha is confused by the sudden promotion. Why would such an important prosecutor choose him over everyone else?
On his first assignment, Chaeha joins Taeseon at a murder scene. The victim is Aleksand Kim. Detective Ma suspects he's Koryoin, an ethnic Korean from the former Soviet Union. Kim had been in Korea for less than a day before his body was found in a dark alleyway near a casino. The cause of death appears to be cardiac arrest brought on by drug poisoning. Detective Ma thinks it's a straightforward case. Ever since the nearby casino opened, the neighbourhood has seen a rise in crime and drug use. Kim was probably another drug addict who overdosed.
Why does Taeseon seem to hate Chaeha?

Before changing careers, Chaeha was a police officer. He has some experience with forensic investigations, so Taeseon asks him to examine the victim's body. Chaeha shares his observations and concludes that Kim likely died from a drug overdose. Taeseon isn't impressed. He finds the analysis too shallow. Chaeha points out there's a suspicious needle mark on Kim's neck. They also discover a plastic fragment inside his mouth. Something doesn't add up, so Taeseon believes there's more to this death than a simple overdose.
After spending a night working together, Chaeha tells Taeseon how much he admires him. He looks up to the prosecutor as a role model and hopes to learn from him. Taeseon responds coldly, making it clear he doesn't appreciate the praise. Later, he summons Chaeha to his office for an even nastier conversation. Taeseon knows all about Chaeha's family scandal. Chaeha's father was convicted of murder, making him the son of a killer. The prosecutor brings up this painful history to taunt him. Chaeha insists that he's nothing like his dad. He doesn't understand why Taeseon is so hostile and treats Chaeha as if he has a personal grudge.
Chaeha makes a new friend at work. Section Chief Song Hanuel works under Taeseon, but he's much more cheerful. Chaeha and Hanuel hit it off, especially after discovering that they live in the same apartment building. Meanwhile, the investigation into Kim's death continues. Chaeha reveals his harsh views about criminals. He even declares, "The only way to kill a murderer is to be a prosecutor." Taeseon keeps dismissing Chaeha's ideas and talking down to him. By now, Chaeha is convinced his boss hates him. One evening, this tension explodes into a heated confrontation.

The Prosecutor's Proposal Review
Review
Drama Review Score: 9.1

As one of the biggest BL hits of the year, The Prosecutor's Proposal totally deserves the hype. One of my favourite things about this series? It's half crime thriller, half gay romance. This combo is surprisingly rare. Mainstream K-dramas are full of investigation shows, but good luck finding one where two guys fall in love! Korean BL dramas offer plenty of same-sex couples, yet they never solve crimes. Thankfully, The Prosecutor's Proposal combines the best of both worlds. We get a legit mystery AND hot man-on-man action!
At first, I couldn't fully enjoy The Prosecutor's Proposal because it felt rushed. How do you squeeze such a complicated story into 20-minute episodes? The series barely has time to introduce the two leads, let alone explain their backstories. Wanna know about Chaeha's childhood trauma? Here's a 30-second flashback. That's all you're getting! The murder investigation suffers from the same problem. Instead of showing us how the case unfolds, we get a short version of the mystery. The characters recite their observations like reading bullet points from a PowerPoint. They speak so seriously, but their conversations aren't that interesting.
After a while, The Prosecutor's Proposal gets better at telling the story. The murder investigation is still important, but the characters also have time to develop their relationships. The series finds a comfortable pace, balancing the serious plots with just the right amount of personal moments. By the second half, The Prosecutor's Proposal delivers one excellent episode after another. The crime drama becomes so compelling. The couple's romance also feels super exhilarating. Wow, I'm amazed! Life is good when a BL series fires on all cylinders and gets everything right!
Early on, Taeseon treats Chaeha like crap. Around Episode 4, his attitude suddenly changes. The story doesn't explain it that well, but Taeseon goes from "I hate this bastard" to "I want a slice of that ass…" I prefer this new relationship dynamic, which is more fun to watch. Mind you, Taeseon is still problematic. We shouldn't romanticize a predatory boss who gropes his employee at work. But alas, I'm a toxic BL fan who enjoys this couple anyway. Their flirting amuses me. The shower sex is steamy as hell. Plus, I like the fantasy of two guys solving crimes while falling in love.
Taeseon's actor (Kim Yoon Sik) fits his role like a glove. Put him in a suit, let him glare at everyone with contempt, and he turns into the scary prosecutor we all fear. His co-star (Park Si Woo) shines in the emotional moments. When Chaeha gets teary-eyed, I feel like crying along with him. Best of all, the supporting cast is incredible. The actress who plays Jayeon (Kim Jung Tae) steals every scene she's in. What an icon! Even the villains deliver convincing performances. I get a kick out of seeing the bad guys lie through their teeth and wiggle their way out of justice.
The Prosecutor's Proposal isn't perfectly written. The story feels rushed and has tons of plot holes. Plus, the AI usage is awful! Despite the flaws, I still enjoyed the finale, which gave me such an adrenaline rush. I love it when crime dramas expose the final boss in an epic showdown. Aha, you were the bad guy all along! Let's fight to the death! The last scene focuses on the couple, reminding me how much I like them. Overall, The Prosecutor's Proposal is really impressive. This unique BL drama proves that crime thrillers and gay romances can work brilliantly together.
Summary
Compelling story
The story feels rushed at first, cramming a complex investigation into 20-minute episodes. The second half delivers one great episode after another. This crime thriller becomes super compelling!
Complicated romance
Taeseon is a problematic boss, so I shouldn't be rooting for this couple. Given their history, should they even be together? But alas, I'm a toxic BL fan who enjoys their flirting and steamy sex scenes!
Excellent acting
Taeseon's actor (Kim Yoon Sik) fits his role as the intimidating prosecutor, while his co-star (Park Si Woo) shines in the emotional scenes. The supporting cast also delivers iconic performances.
Happy ending
The Prosecutor's Proposal has a happy ending. The finale gives me such an adrenaline rush with its epic confrontation against the main villain. The couple still reunites happily on an AI-generated beach.
Questionable artistry
The awful AI usage annoys me and undermines an otherwise solid production. Every episode begins with those ugly AI-generated opening credits, which make the series look cheap. Get rid of it!
91%
The Prosecutor's Proposal combines a serious crime thriller and a spicy gay romance. We rarely get a BL series this unique. Watching two men solve murders while falling in love is so much fun!
