First Note of Love is a Taiwanese BL series about the romance between a singer and a songwriter. The main character is a famous band member who left the spotlight after his brother's death. He has struggled with performance anxiety. Years later, his manager pushes him to stage a comeback. They bring in a young songwriting prodigy to help with his return. Despite their different backgrounds and personalities, the two form a close bond.
My favourite part about First Note of Love is the adorable lead actor. He embodies a shy and sensitive protagonist, which is my favourite archetype. From his nervous glances to his bashful smiles, the series has created an endearing character I want to champion. Unfortunately, the story moves too slowly and has too much filler. The boring parts of the narrative overshadow the heartfelt moments in the couple's journey.

Plot
Matt and Neil are brothers who formed a band called Magnet during their university days. They rose to fame with hit songs that topped streaming charts and sold out shows across Asia. However, a car accident claimed Matt's life, leaving Neil heartbroken. After his brother's death, Neil struggled with grief and performance anxiety. He even fainted backstage once. Since then, Neil has stepped away from the spotlight for years.
Reese is Neil's manager at Echo Music. He faces pressure from executives who want to cancel Neil's contract due to his inactivity. Determined to help Neil stage a comeback, Reese encourages him to return to the spotlight. However, Neil seems uninterested. He has let himself go, growing out his hair and stubble. He puts little effort into his career. Nonetheless, Reese reaches out to Sea, a 20-year-old songwriting prodigy. Reese hopes Sea can create tracks for Neil's return.
Sea is a university student who works part-time as a waiter at his friend Luang's café. He lives alone in a small home. His family has moved abroad, and they have grown distant. Sea is surprised to get a job offer from Echo Music. As a child, he was a fan of Magnet. He treasures a memory of Neil playing him a song, which inspired his love for music. Sea was supposed to attend Magnet's concert on the day Matt died.
Sea feels nervous about agreeing to the job offer. He feels intimidated by the idea of working with his childhood idol. However, Luang accepts the offer on his behalf, so Sea has no choice but to attend a meeting at Echo Music. Reese and his assistant Mei are both fans of Neil. Reese praises Sea's talent and says his style is perfect for Neil's comeback album. However, Neil is unimpressed. He sees Sea as a timid university student and criticizes him for lacking confidence. After calling Sea "overrated", Neil doubts their ability to work together.
Sea is upset that Neil, his childhood idol, harshly criticizes his music. Feeling frustrated, he lashes out and calls Neil a has-been singer. This remark hits Neil's insecurities since stepping out of the spotlight. Sea abruptly leaves the meeting afterwards. Despite Reese's attempts to apologize on Neil's behalf, Sea refuses the job offer out of pride. Later, Reese confronts Neil, annoyed and insistent that he give Sea a fair chance. Neil eventually listens to Sea's music and feels intrigued by what he hears. He meets Sea at the cafe for a second chance at collaboration.

First Note of Love Review
Review
Drama Review Score: 8.0
First Note of Love is a therapeutic BL drama about a fallen rock star who crosses paths with a quiet songwriter. Together, they navigate a journey of grief and healing. Music is integral to the story, setting the mood with an emotional soundtrack. I particularly enjoy the opening song, which is gentle, soothing, and full of melancholy. It perfectly captures the essence of this series. Along with the elegant cinematography, First Note of Love captivates us with its artistry.
While there are heartfelt moments in the couple's journey, they get overshadowed by the filler. Dull chats and mundane interactions add little to the story, dragging down the pace. First Note of Love needs a tighter script that cuts the unnecessary scenes. Dare I say, almost the entire first episode can be skipped. The second episode flows better when the characters meet properly. A few other episodes face a similar issue, like the weaker songs you want to fast-forward on an album. The slow pacing lingers throughout the narrative, so you may feel bored because nothing special is happening.
I love Sea's character. In any fiction, my favourite archetype is the sweet, shy, and sensitive protagonist. Sea ticks every box imaginable. He's an adorable twink with an aura of sadness, melting my heart like kryptonite. In Episode 2, Sea wears a hoodie with a baseball cap, tapping his fingers on the keyboard and nodding along to the music. When he flashes a bashful smile, I'm utterly smitten. Sea is so cute that my brain's chemistry short-circuits and develops with an irrational fondness for him. I can ignore everything bad about First Note of Love by only obsessing over Sea.
Michael Chang captures Sea's timidness with darting glances, nervous expressions, and an embarrassed smile when he can't hide his excitement. I already liked Michael from his last BL drama, but he reaches peak cuteness in this series. He also shines in dramatic scenes. Any time Sea gets teary-eyed, I'm crying along with him. His co-star (Charles Tu) brings roguish charm and a confident swagger, especially whenever Neil wears a leather jacket. I thank First Note of Love for saving Charles from the ruins of HIStory 4 by giving him a better project to define his career.
Due to my attachment to Sea, I'm fond of his romance with Neil. While the relationship isn't very passionate, I still like their sweet interactions and supportive bond. Anyone who can make Sea blush adorably is a good match in my books! That said, their connection feels slightly rushed. Early on, some playful sexual tension would make their arc more engaging. The secondary couple doesn't interest me, partly due to weaker performances. However, I enjoy the novelty of seeing a Thai actor in a Taiwanese BL drama, adding a unique cross-cultural twist to the story.
The last two episodes bring the storylines to a satisfying conclusion. Neil finds closure with the trauma of his brother's death, a journey that may be predictable but still feels poignant. Sea, who once used music to escape his sadness, learns to connect with his lover and open up through a song. Despite some slow or uneventful moments, I appreciate the sentimentality in First Note of Love. My favourite aspect is Sea, the irresistible twink! Beyond that, I also enjoyed the sensitive character arcs, emotional growth, and the thoughtful use of music as a therapeutic tool.
Summary
Slow story
First Note of Love focuses on a therapeutic journey of grief and healing. Despite the heartfelt moments and Sea's lovable character, the story's pacing is too slow and suffers from excessive filler.
Supportive romance
Although their relationship isn't that passionate, Sea and Neil have a sweet, supportive romance. They help each other heal from trauma. The secondary couple doesn't interest me.
Adorable acting
Sea's actor (Michael Chang) is so cute, and I'm completely besotted with him. He captures his character's timidness through nervous glances and shy smiles. He's also great in dramatic scenes.
Happy ending
First Note of Love has a happy ending that wraps up the character arcs meaningfully. The finale includes sweet and sentimental moments with Sea. He's as enchanting as ever!
Soothing artistry
With a soothing soundtrack and elegant cinematography, the series is elevated by its artistry. I really like the opening song. However, I must dock points for Neil's ugly wig at the beginning.
80%
First Note of Love is a gentle BL drama with meaningful character arcs, even if some parts of the story may be slow or uneventful. Sea is an adorable protagonist, and his actor does a great job.

Analysis
Sea
Sea begins the series as a quiet character who lives alone without family. Shy and soft-spoken, he avoids interacting with his classmates. In Episode 1, he turns down their social invitations, isolating himself from others. The only person he speaks to is Liang, his boss at the café. Otherwise, he has no friendships and pours himself into songwriting as his escape.
Sea's social withdrawal stems from a loneliness that has followed him since childhood. In Episode 4, a flashback shows Sea as a young boy. Everywhere he goes, he is by himself. He walks home alone, enters an empty house alone, sits in the playground alone, and stares at the ocean alone. For a child his age, you'd expect him to be surrounded by family or friends. Instead, he seems disconnected from the world.
Idol
A defining moment in Sea's life is his first meeting with Neil. This friendly stranger strikes up a casual conversation and promotes his band without realizing the impact it would have. Neil unknowingly sparks Sea's love for music. Magnet's songs became a source of comfort during the young boy's loneliness. Feeling inspired, Sea begins songwriting. This hobby consumes him, turning into a lifelong passion. Sea is more than just a fan of Neil. He views the singer as an influential childhood idol.
Unfortunately, our protagonists have a tense reunion as adults. Since Neil is bitter about being forced into a comeback by his manager, he sabotages the collaboration with Sea. He would be rude to whichever songwriter Reese set him up with. Neil dismisses Sea's talents, oblivious to how harsh his words are. Before this meeting, Sea was nervous about meeting his idol. Imagine how devastating it is to have his music and passion belittled by the man he greatly respected. That gotta hurt!
Neil
Sea is upset during his meeting with Neil. In the heat of the moment, he calls his idol a has-been singer and rejects the job offer out of pride. Later, he downplays Neil's talent by describing his performance as "just okay". When Liang reveals that Sea is a secret Magnet fanboy, Sea pretends he only likes Matt and excludes Neil. Sea holds onto his grudge by hiding how much he admires Neil. It's his way of coping from pain, shutting himself off and refusing to share his true feelings.
Neil's rudeness toward Sea comes from his own struggles. For years, he has been dealing with the trauma of his brother's death. Neil's dishevelled appearance, from his stubble to his unkempt hair, reflects his emotional turmoil. Like Sea, he is coping with loneliness. He misses the warmth and support his brother once gave him. Neil has become so fragile that performing on stage triggers his anxiety. When Neil met Sea, he was also emotionally guarded. He keeps pushing others away and doesn't want to open up about his vulnerability.
Anxiety
At Reese's urging, Neil finally listens to Sea's demo and is blown away by the song. After realizing he has been a dick to a genuinely talented songwriter, Neil wants to make amends. He visits Sea's workplace and offers to perform at his school to make up for his earlier behaviour. True to his character, Neil remains too prideful to give a direct apology. Instead, he lets his actions speak for him.
Neil arrives at the concert with a makeover. His haircut, clean-shaven look, and leather jacket exude star power, making him look every bit the idol. Despite his confident image, Neil still struggles with performance anxiety. Singing without Matt on stage is too traumatic. Midway through the show, the pressure overwhelms him. Unable to continue, Neil quits the performance, exposing the vulnerability hidden beneath his bravado.
Support
Sea rushes backstage to comfort Neil. Unlike his childhood memories of Neil as an idol, he sees a vulnerable man who needs help. Sea's earlier anger fades, replaced by compassion and sympathy. He holds Neil and offers soothing reassurances, which eases the singer's panic attack. With Sea's support, Neil regains his composure. He finds the strength to return to the stage and finish his song.
What seems like a small gesture has a profound effect on Neil's self-esteem. He can perform for the first time in public without quitting midway, which is a huge breakthrough. Sea's support is like a lifeline, reminding Neil that he is not alone during his weakest moment. It mirrors how Neil's casual conversation helped Sea overcome his childhood loneliness years ago. Small moments of compassion can pull someone out of a crisis.
Connection
After the performance, Neil and Sea seem more relaxed around each other, showing a breakthrough in their relationship. Neil buys fries and offers them to Sea, who refuses at first. Neil tries again, this time bringing the fork to Sea's mouth. Sea finally takes a bite, and they both smile. The exchange symbolizes their relationship growth. Neil reaches out, Sea hesitates, but ultimately, he reciprocates. They slowly grow closer, sharing more of themselves and letting their guard down.
During their chat, Neil opens up about his anxiety, admitting his insecurities as a singer who "can't even finish a song". Sea softens and retracts his earlier ~has-been~ remark, admitting that Neil is amazing. He also shares his own struggles with anxiety. "I was like that too. When I was stressed, I had trouble breathing. Your songs were my remedy." Just as Neil became vulnerable, Sea reciprocates and opens up about his past. Two lonely souls are finally breaking down their emotional walls. The scene ends with Neil giving his necklace to Sea, a token of their deepening connection.
Insecurities
Sea and Neil work together, bonding even if they clash over creative differences. Collaborating with his idol should be exciting for Sea, but Orca's arrival brings complications. The confident and talented superstar makes Sea feel self-conscious about his inexperience. Feeling out of his depth, he hides his insecurities again. When Neil asks him what is wrong, Sea pretends he's okay. He won't admit his anxiety about not being good enough to make music with Neil.
Liang encourages Neil to mentor Sea, reminding him, "Sea is still young. You have to guide him." Neil responds with small but thoughtful gestures to support his partner. He offers to carry Sea's backpack, symbolizing his willingness to shoulder the burden. He also places a blanket over Sea while he sleeps, showing a protective instinct. Episode 5 ends with Neil praising Sea's performance and boosting his confidence. Sea replies with determination, "I will get stronger for Magnet." Yet, his smile fades as he looks away. The story hints he may still be masking his insecurities.
Doubt
Sea writes a song, but it fails to meet Reese's standards. Reese bluntly tells him it sounds generic and lacks soul. Yikes, the feedback is harsh! He also warns that Neil's career is in jeopardy, adding immense pressure on Sea to deliver an exceptional work. Already struggling with inadequacy, Sea grows frustrated with his lack of inspiration. His self-doubt deepens as he questions whether he's a competent songwriter.
Sea listens to a message from his mother. She lives overseas, shedding light on why he may be distant from his parents. When she invites him to join her new family, the implication is that he should attend grad school in Germany instead of pursuing music in Taiwan. He breaks down in tears, overwhelmed by doubt. Sea feels lost about his future. Is he talented enough for a music career? Should he consider giving up? Despite his turmoil, Sea suffers alone. He won't confide his insecurities to anyone.
Confidant
Despite Sea's evasiveness, Neil senses something is wrong and wants to help. After inviting Sea to his apartment, he shares a video of Matt and himself playing guitar together. The footage captures an intimate memory of his late brother, which he never shared with anyone else. This is Neil's way of being vulnerable and opening up. He hopes Sea would feel safe enough to confide in him.
Neil talks candidly about his past struggles, including moments when he considered giving up on his music career. He can relate to Sea's feelings of inadequacy. Neil also recalls how Matt motivated him. Now, Neil hopes to provide that same support to Sea. "I want to become the person you can rely on. Are you willing to trust me?" Neil's kindness resonates with Sea, who feels overwhelmed with gratitude. Sea kisses Neil impulsively, expressing the emotions he can't put into words.
Passion
After kissing Neil, Sea spends the rest of Episode 7 acting like a neurotic mess. He frets about everything, from their age difference to the impact on their professional relationship. Being painfully shy, Sea may be embarrassed by his own boldness. He probably never expected to seduce a celebrity, let alone his childhood idol. In Sea's dream, Neil asks him, "Do you like me better, or do you like my brother better?" lmaoooo. Psychologically, there's a lot to unpack in this erotic fantasy. I don't know how to interpret it!
Eventually, Sea sorts out his romantic feelings. "Neil, I like you too. I really, really like you." In addition, Sea figures out how he feels about music after talking to Orca. The experienced singer offers thoughtful advice, urging Sea to stop accommodating Neil and basing his self-worth on him. Instead, Orca encourages Sea to trust his own talent. "This album will be great because of you!" Sea feels unburdened after their chat and approaches songwriting with renewed passion.
Self-Improvement
The story doesn't pretend Sea magically produces a great song. Instead, it shows his dedication and hard work. To concentrate better, he decides to spend time away from Neil. While the BL fan in me wishes for more relationship moments, I respect this mature approach to his journey. Sea's friends also step up to support him. There's a sweet scene where they prepare him a nice meal at the café. Liang and Ting Fei feel like Sea's older siblings, ensuring their little brother is well-fed.
While Sea works on songwriting, Neil focuses on confronting his insecurities. He dedicates time to voice training and exercise to rebuild his confidence. Neil's biggest challenge is facing his fear of public performance. Reese suggests he work as a tour guide for a day, forcing him to speak to an audience. Neil rises to the challenge and performs well. His journey of self-improvement mirrors Sea's, as both work hard to overcome their struggles.
Love
Sea finishes writing his song and asks Neil for feedback. You know the music is damn good because listening to it makes Neil want to have sex afterwards. Did Sea create a sex anthem? Maybe! The couple's lovemaking scene is very respectful, very demure. From soft touches to gentle strokes, it conveys sensuality without being explicit.
The song also earns Reese's approval. During the meeting, he teases that Sea's love for Neil inspired the song's brilliance. While that may be true, another reason lies in Sea learning to love himself. He only writes a beautiful song after he stops doubting his abilities. "My music isn't brave enough," Sea once stated in Episode 4. This courage he speaks of is self-confidence. As Sea begins to trust in his talents, his determination grows stronger. By not giving up, he can find the inspiration to create a masterpiece.
