Low Frequency – Series Review & Episode Guide

Mon is an interior designer in his late twenties. Eighteen years ago, he suffered a childhood trauma, which had put him in a prolonged coma. His best friend Guy also died during the incident. Although Mon survived and recovered, he still suffers from regular nightmares. Doctors cannot treat his condition. Mon turns to spiritual blessings, holy amulets, and monk visits for peace of mind.

Mon has a sister, Bua. She works as a celebrity manager. One of her clients is Thames, a famous young actor who stars in a hit drama. His career is on the rise. Recently, Bua introduced Mon and Thames to each other. The friendly Thames flirts with Bua and exchanges contact information. They begin communicating through casual text messages, often bringing a smile to each other's faces.

Mon and Thames encounter each other while shopping at a convenience store. Thames invites Mon to share a meal with him and his grandmother. They enjoy a pleasant time together. Thames has a close relationship with his grandma, who looks after him. Days later, Mon carries on with his usual routine. However, he's shocked to learn from the news that Thames was involved in a car accident. Reports claim he was intoxicated during the collision.

Although Thames survives the car accident, he falls into a coma. His grandmother worries about his recovery. Bua is also stressed since Thames received media backlash for being a drunk driver. According to toxicology reports, the police couldn't find any traces of alcohol in his body. Yet, the smell lingered over his clothing. Bua suspects someone may be trying to frame Thames and get him into trouble. However, she has no proof.

Mon senses his sister's distress and offers to help with the investigation. She is hesitant since this case can be potentially dangerous. He promises to be careful. Mon has a unique ability that comes in handy. Ever since his coma, he has been able to communicate with the spiritual world. When Mon visits the hospital, he can see Thames' spirit. Thames is relieved that somebody can talk to him. Together, they spend time to uncover the truth behind the car accident.

Low Frequency is a mediocre BL drama that doesn't inspire strong feelings. The beginning is okay, intriguing me due to the supernatural twists and the protagonist's mysterious backstory. My interest dwindles after each uneventful episode. I don't care about these characters, their romance, or whatever nonsense is happening in the plot. My apathy grows stronger towards the end, paralyzing me with how much I don't give a damn. Although Low Frequency is mostly watchable, the series produces little excitement or enthusiasm.

In Low Frequency, the main characters spend most of their time investigating a car accident. This dull mystery dominates the narrative, dragging out each episode with cryptic conversations and meaningless misdirections. The series shifts its focus onto random supporting characters who are supposed to be suspects. Ooh, look at this shady scoundrel with a secret to hide! Aah, check out that guilty villain plotting and scheming! Despite the contrived drama, I don't care who the culprit is. Low Frequency fails because the central plot is worse than a generic police procedural show.

Low Frequency introduces a supernatural element. Instead of two human protagonists, Thames falls into a coma and becomes a spirit. This twist is occasionally fun. It allows the series to be more imaginative than following an ordinary plot. However, the novelty wears off quickly. Besides a few gimmicky moments, it doesn't make a big difference in whether Thames is a spirit. He should have been traumatized by being on the verge of death, but the story hardly explores his thoughts or emotions. Low Frequency gives a superficial interpretation of a paranormal story.

In addition to the lacklustre plot, Low Frequency suffers from a passionless romance. Mon and Thames don't make a compelling couple. They develop an instant attraction in the first episode based on shallow interactions. Afterwards, their relationship develops without teasing any sexual tension. Their flirting feels forced, like the story tries too hard to recreate formulaic BL scenarios. It doesn't help that the leads share little chemistry. There are no sparks during affectionate moments. Beyond the lack of physical intimacy, their emotional connection is weak and unpersuasive.

Low Frequency elevates the story through its polished production values. Even if the plot isn't captivating, the elegant visuals make the series look more ethereal and majestic. In Episode 5, the characters hold hands and run together while pigeons fly around them. The optically interesting shot comes from a competent cinematographer who puts thought into framing and composition. Also, a few scenes are mildly charming, highlighting Mon and Thames' pleasant personalities. Both leads are nice guys who behave inoffensively, like a sweet and soft vanilla flavour.

The last few episodes of Low Frequency go downhill in quality. The dumb plot becomes increasingly outrageous as it unravels. We learn the culprit's identity, but the reveal isn't surprising or satisfying. The climax is a ridiculous gunfight that makes all the drama seem silly. While the story isn't awful enough to annoy me, I have no emotional engagement. Not even the cutesy BL scenes in the finale can drum up enthusiasm. My prevailing opinion after watching this series is a resounding meh. Low Frequency is so lifelessly bland that it has hypnotized me into an entertainment coma.
