Cutest couples
See Your Love features a sweet romance between a business heir and his caregiver, who has hearing loss. Their relationship is built on mutual support and understanding. Since the couple has communication barriers, the story must find creative ways for them to bond nonverbally. This imagination leads to meaningful exchanges you won't find in most BL dramas.
Match Play has a romance between a famous idol and a stunt actor. Early on, the couple's personality clash creates entertaining sparks. Later, the pair grows closer, but the story doesn't rush their journey of falling in love. It allows the leads to spend time together and develop a natural bond. As a result, their relationship feels very genuine.
Tadaima, Okaeri is about a same-sex family in a suburban neighbourhood. I'm amazed to see a married gay couple raising a child in Japanese anime, breaking significant cultural barriers. The leads are portrayed as loving and well-adjusted. Plus, the scenes with their kids are funny and adorable!
Best characters
Sea is a young songwriting prodigy in First Note of Love. I adore his character so much. I instantly became attached to him as soon as he flashed that bashful smile. My favourite archetype is the sweet, shy, and sensitive protagonist, which Sea fits perfectly. Nobody can win over BL Watcher's heart more than a cute twink with an aura of sadness.
Nam Kyu is one of my favourite characters from Love in the Big City. He's a socially awkward small-town boy with an earnest and endearing personality. From the moment I saw Nam Kyu clapping his hands to the nightclub music, I became smitten with him. This sweet cinnamon roll of a human being is simply too precious~
Jae Hee is the female lead in Love in the Big City Movie and the gay protagonist's university best friend. She's bold, free-spirited, and confident. I love Jae Hee's character because she's incredibly complex. She embodies the story's message of embracing who you are without fear.
Taichi is the lead of I Hear the Sunspot. Besides charming us with his energetic personality, I admire him for being a proud advocate. Taichi always stands up to bullies, speaks out against injustices, and supports those who are struggling. He wants to help people and make their lives better.
Don't Care for an Old Man's Underwear
Daichi is one of the main characters from Don't Care for an Old Man's Underwear. The story's protagonist is an ignorant father, but Daichi helps enlighten his views. Like an LGBTQ+ helpline in human form, his character offers thoughtful advice. I admire Daichi's graciousness, confronting prejudices without losing his composure. He takes the high road when others go low.
Yu Sen is one of the leads in Let's Talk About Chu. I like him because he doesn't resemble a typical protagonist in a BL drama. A poker player is a niche career and rarely depicted in gay love stories. Due to his gambling profession, you may expect his character to be poised and self-assured. Yet, Yu Sen is actually tense and awkward in real life. He constantly defies stereotypes, so you can't put him in a box.
Funniest comedies
Ossan's Love Returns is the 2024 sequel to the beloved Japanese franchise. Fans will be pleased to know that the comedic writing is in top form. This series is packed with so much wacky humour, silly gags, cheeky punchlines, and comically absurd scenarios. When Ossan's Love Returns hits its stride, it's a strong contender for one of the funniest BL dramas ever.
Love Is A Poison has a romance between a successful lawyer and a mysterious flirt. This story often mixes romantic scenarios with a bit of cheeky mischief. The couple's flirting feels playful, finding just the right balance of sweetness and spiciness. The series doesn't take itself too seriously, and you'll be too busy laughing to care that Love Is A Poison is over the top.
My Damn Business is about two employees at a struggling company. This lighthearted office romcom likes to have fun, filling each episode with cheeky banter and amusing scenarios. The writing is surprisingly witty. You can just sit back, relax, and laugh at all the silly jokes.
You Want Some? is about two university students trying to seduce each other. Their enemies-to-lovers journey unfolds with lots of humour and charm. It adds a cheeky joke here, a flirty moment there, and follows up with a touch of saucy relationship drama. The series finds its groove as a cute and playful romantic comedy.
Most creative
Smells Like Green Spirit is a story about a bullied high school student from a small rural town. Like the absolute antithesis of BL, this unconventional teen drama overturns every narrative trope in the genre. The romance has an odd twist, the characters come with eccentric quirks, and the plot is chaotic as hell. Smells Like Green Spirit feels drastically different from the norm, which I find exciting.
In Love for Love's Sake, the main character enters a universe that resembles a virtual video game. He must navigate decision trees, mission objectives, and even affinity systems. The story explores many quirky scenarios, impressing me with all the clever ideas.
In To Pee or Not To Pee, the main character has a health condition and can't control his bladder. It's an incredibly original story with a creative premise. I didn't think it was possible to create a romance around bladder control, but this short movie finds an interesting way to explore an unusual topic.
In Latex, the protagonist has psychometric powers and can read people's memories by touching their personal belongings. Cleverly, he uses his ability to make money and seduce men. I love seeing him apply his powers in interesting situations. Unfortunately, the film is too short and can't explore this complex concept in depth.
Anti Reset is about a human protagonist who hires an android as his caregiver. With AI's prevalence in recent years, I'm fascinated by the love story between a human and a robot. Unfortunately, the series doesn't capitalize on the potential and fails to explore deeper themes. Even so, Anti Reset gets credit for tackling a complex topic. It's much quirkier than your typical romance.
Most emotional
Unknown is about two orphans who grow up together. It begins with a powerful premiere. The protagonist gives food to a starving child, rescues him from the streets, and protects this vulnerable boy from gangster violence. In the background, the soundtrack amplifies every emotion to its fullest. You'll feel moved by their epic relationship journey.
The Paradise of Thorns is about a gay couple who runs a durian orchard. A tear-jerking moment occurs when the hospital won't recognize their relationship, so they don't receive emergency healthcare. As the story progresses, all the characters are pushed toward their emotional breaking point. Their desperation and raw anguish will resonate powerfully with viewers.
My Sunshine is about a skating coach and his two students. Most of this movie is a heartwarming journey that will make you root for the characters and their success. However, the ending makes me want to cry. A devastating turn of events destroys the precious joy and warm atmosphere, making you realize that happiness is very delicate.
Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo
Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo is about two teenagers who befriend each other in a quiet small town. Early on, the series focuses on two teens fighting against the odds. The lead is powerless to escape from his abusive home, but he finds a glimmer of hope with his new friend. Unfortunately, the melodrama becomes too convoluted later in the story, weakening the emotional impact. Nonetheless, the first few episodes are quite moving.

Living With Him is about two childhood friends who become university roommates. Although the plot may seem ordinary, the series has won me over with its wholesomeness. Both leads are remarkably down-to-earth guys with kind personalities. They support each other and behave unproblematically. As their romance develops, the story constantly highlights their empathy.
Twilight Out of Focus is about three couples in a high school film club. This anime shines in its introspection. The characters frequently talk about their feelings, share any insecurities, and allow themselves to be vulnerable. I love hearing their inner thoughts, which helps me understand them better. As they contemplate life and relationships, the story handles these storylines sensitively.
Takara's Treasure is a love story between a university freshman and the senior he idolizes. Each episode contains thoughtful storylines with positive messages. While there's some occasional tension, the emotional drama never becomes too stressful. As the leads grow closer and get to know each other better, their scenes are sweet, sentimental, and sincere.
Sugar Dog Life is a story about a police officer and a convenience store worker. Both main characters are sweethearts with precious personalities. I smile warmly at their kind gestures and oddly endearing quirks. It's easy to root for these two nice guys to become a couple. They get along, help each other, and share similar values. My happiness soars as I watch Sugar Dog Life, which maintains a cheerful momentum.

Let's Eat Together Aki and Haru: More Please! is the sequel to the Japanese BL movie, continuing the love story between two friends who live together. The leads have warm, engaging personalities. Their interactions with each other seem sweet and genuine. While there may be a little tension between them, it never turns too stressful. Let's Eat Together, Aki and Haru is careful about never letting the conflicts tarnish the relaxing vibe.
Most underrated
In Match Play, a famous idol falls in love with a stunt actor. Their lighthearted romance develops naturally and flows smoothly. This well-written series should have been a hit with BL fans. Unfortunately, it remains a hidden gem due to its vertical film format. Not many are willing to go out of their way to search for this series, which can only be viewed on a niche platform.
In Mr. Mitsuya's Planned Feeding, the couple has a 25-year age difference. The lead is in his 20s, while his love interest is in his 50s. This significant age gap will discourage some viewers from checking out the series. However, the story is actually quite thoughtful. It explores realistic themes and handles the relationship arc as respectfully as possible.
Best guilty pleasure
Chastity High is about a prestigious academy that forbids its students from dating, and any rule breakers will be expelled. As expected from a saucy teen drama, the story is outlandish. Plot holes are glaring, while the characters behave erratically. The story frequently prioritizes shocking twists over sensible logic. Even so, I shake my head and laugh at their hilarious mess. This series entertains me because it's always so extreme.
Eccentric Romance is about two university friends investigating a campus killer. This murder mystery is written poorly without meaningful development. The story loses momentum once you realize it's another unproductive episode with no breakthrough. Despite the slow-paced narrative, I enjoy the couple's interactions. They make me smile or giggle at their cute, playful exchanges. At times, Eccentric Romance shows glimpses of potential here and there.
