BL movies are also known as LGBT films or simply gay cinema. Back in the day, movies with gay leads or love interests were considered a narrow niche. These stories didn't particularly appeal to mainstream audiences. Made with low budgets, not many filmmakers got involved in a genre that few people watched. There isn't much box-office profit from producing gay movies.
As a result, you won't find too much diversity in the few mainstream gay movies that got greenlighted. Usually, the story covered solemn topics like AIDS. Or, it was a melodramatic coming-out story rampant with homophobia. Gay movies with Asian characters were even rarer. They existed, but these films weren't numerous. They definitely weren't popular outside of a limited demographic.
With the emerging popularity of BL dramas, the good news is that BL movies have seen a slight uptick in interest. In the past few years, you may have noticed some new BL films popping up here and there. You still won't find too many gay movies in cinemas, but at least it's better than having zero representation.
Typically, BL movies are pretty interesting to watch. Despite having a low budget and casting unknown actors, most projects are done with a lot of passion. They are produced by filmmakers genuinely interested in telling well-crafted LGBT stories. BL Watcher has seen quite a few Asian gay movies in my lifetime. After School is a Taiwanese coming-of-age movie about a cram school. The story has a significant LGBTQ+ focus. The main character and his best friend are teenage troublemakers. They play classroom pranks instead of taking their studies seriously. A new instructor arrives, bringing progressive views and empathetic leadership. The protagonist becomes more open-minded under his mentor's positive influence.
With many LGBTQ+ characters and themes, After School seems like a well-meaning movie. This cheerful coming-of-age tale evokes nostalgia, capturing the whimsical adventures of youth. However, the story feels cliched and reiterates corny messages. Despite the positive intentions, it doesn't depict gay topics with enough nuance. The bromance ventures into romantic territory, but the outcome of the relationship doesn't satisfy me.

After Sundown is a Thai supernatural horror BL movie in a historical setting. The main character grew up in the countryside. One day, a wealthy family acquaintance offers him a place to stay in the city. After moving into his new home, the protagonist experiences scary visions and strange nightmares. He meets his benefactor's grandson, who has been cursed with misfortune. The only way to lift the curse is if they agree to be soulmates.
I appreciate the creativity in After Sundown, combining a supernatural mystery with the horror and romance genres. Likewise, I enjoy the unique historical setting, stunning visuals, and elegant atmosphere. Yet, my immersion breaks since the bizarre plot seems unbelievable. Despite the couple's affection, the circumstances that bring them together feel contrived. I also wish the story focused more on character development.

Childhood is a Thai BL short movie about a teenage crush. The main character is a high school student who enjoys spending time with his best friend. They used to do everything together, from frolicking in the waterfall to relaxing on the balcony. Despite their blissful adolescence, this relationship changes once his buddy finds a girlfriend. The protagonist struggles with his feelings as he observes the couple from afar.
Filmed with almost no dialogue, Childhood uses visual cues to convey its narrative. The movie understands how to portray a teen romance through subtle body language and intimate facial expressions. The plot itself isn't innovative and relies on overused tropes. However, the storytelling technique is clever and keeps me engaged. The highlight is the talented lead actor, who delivers a phenomenal display of emotions.

Despite the domestic bliss, they wonder whether their futures will include one another.
Like comfort food, Let's Eat Together, Aki and Haru is a cozy movie with relaxing vibes. The laidback plot, likeable characters, and lighthearted interactions culminate in a charming experience. The enthusiastic actors also bring lively pizazz to their roles. However, the couple's romantic content is so minimal that it resembles a bromance. This mundane film doesn't stand out since other BL dramas have done the friends-to-lovers trope more compellingly.

Reluctantly, he must communicate with the deceased to fulfill his last wishes.
A charming and creative movie, Marry My Dead Body provides two hours of delightful entertainment. The story takes a while to warm up and establish its unusual premise. Once the film hits its stride, I enjoy the cheerful humour, goofy antics, and lovable protagonists. Although there is no romance, the plot focuses on a gay protagonist and contains poignant LGBTQ+ themes. Both charismatic leads also bring immense enthusiasm to their roles.

Monster is a Japanese movie about a fifth-grade student and his troubles at school. The main character is a child who lives with his single mother. Lately, she has noticed unusual behaviour from her son. He hides secrets, brings suspicious items home, and even goes missing at night. When she confronts the principal and teachers, they won't speak candidly about what happened on campus. Her quest for answers triggers a chain of consequences.
A complex movie told from various perspectives, Monster examines the power of perception. Each character has a different reality as insecurities cloud their judgment. I'm impressed by the story's thought-provoking themes, elaborate metaphors, and meaningful social commentary. I also appreciate the cast's powerful performances. Although not a typical gay romance film, its poignant messages will resonate with LGBTQ+ viewers.

Fans of the original will enjoy the elegant conclusion to their beloved BL franchise.

The movie also highlights the cultural differences between two generations of gay men. Despite the meaningful themes, the inelegant writing includes dated cliches with lewd stereotypes. The characters are also unrelatable and unsympathetic.

He works closely with an employee in the kitchen, preparing food and creating new recipes. As romantic feelings grow over time, their relationship becomes complicated.
The first Pure Vanilla movie and its sequel follow an elegantly simple formula. The plot plays out exactly as you expect, offering little surprises. Also, the acting has room for improvement, especially with how the leads deliver their lines. Nonetheless, the love story is sweet and highlights a romantic spark. Both short films have dreamy visuals that capture an enchanting atmosphere.

Unfortunately, I have a lukewarm response to Rerun. The short movie is light on romantic content and doesn't expand on the couple's relationship. Instead of feeling emotionally attached, I observe their angsty drama through an indifferent lens. The acting performances are impressive during several scenes. Nonetheless, the lacklustre story isn't substantial enough to resonate in my mind upon completion.

Although Rooted features a gay lead, there is little romance. Instead of finding love, the protagonist goes on a journey of self-discovery. The story emphasizes secret yearning and repressed desires. I appreciate how the filmmaker uses metaphors to convey thoughtful messages. However, the plot seems slow and uneventful. The mundane narrative lacks an exciting climax. Too many scenes are vaguely similar without adding new context.

There's almost no relationship content, so it won't satisfy those who want to watch a traditional BL romance. Nonetheless, I appreciate this uplifting film with a gentle touch.

The Cherry Magic movie isn't as enjoyable as its predecessor. The sequel lacks the vibrant energy, creativity, and humour that made the original series a classic. Nonetheless, I still appreciate seeing the characters spend time together and strengthen their relationship. Their romance develops enchantingly. This sweet and sincere story delivers well-meaning messages about love.

Don't expect a sophisticated story from Grand Guignol. This homoerotic horror film contains cheap thrills rather than a sensible plot. Many scenes sensationalize blood, gore, torture, and death. While there are several intimate moments between the characters, the BL content feels gimmicky and sidelined. Romance is hardly the central focus of this grotesque movie.

Both leads are scantily clad and sensual performers, adding to the film's sauciness. Unfortunately, the twelve-minute movie lacks time to develop a complex narrative. The story is too short and needs more content.

With a longer length, the film could've expanded its themes, explored the romance, and examined the characters in detail. Ultimately, this twenty-minute movie is too short and doesn't offer enough content to make a lasting impact.

Sing in Love is a Japanese BL movie about a teacher who experiences sexual assault trauma. A violent predator attacks the main character in the middle of the night, leaving him psychologically scarred. Despite reporting the crime, the police haven't made an arrest. Suddenly, the abuser initiates contact and taunts his victim. The protagonist's anger and fear send his life on a dangerous downward spiral.
I didn't enjoy Sing in Love the first time I watched it. The disturbing plot, distressing topics, and disgusting behaviour made me extremely uncomfortable. Upon a rewatch, the narrative themes sink in more clearly. This movie explores sexual assault trauma and its psychological torment through a dark, twisted lens. It's supposed to provoke and unnerve you. Despite gaining clarity over the messages, I still feel conflicted about this outrageous film.

As they work together, the two leads form a cozy relationship.
The Beef, Cupcakes and Him movie is a cute love story with a straightforward plot. Don't expect too much depth from the linear narrative, one-dimensional villains, or their transparent antics. This short film is serviceable as something light and casual to fill an hour of your time. With that said, it doesn't make a big impression on me.

Komorebi (2021)
Komorebi is a Taiwanese BL movie about a gay son on the verge of coming out to his mother. The main character has gotten married to his childhood sweetheart recently. While his sisters know about them, the mom remains unaware of her son's relationship. At family dinner, the conversation turns to the subject of his mysterious love life, pushing him closer towards honesty.
There is a warm, gentle coming-out story in Komorebi. This short film features relatable characters, realistic reactions, and reassuring messages. Admittedly, the story is limited by its length, unable to elaborate on certain details. Nonetheless, it does a decent job at making the parent-child dynamic feel wholesome and down-to-earth.

As they grow closer, their relationship fills with seduction.
From the thoughtful themes to the coded metaphors, Let Me Hear It Barefoot is a fascinating movie. The story explores an ambiguous bromance in many enchanting scenes. The couple's highly unusual sexual tension will astonish you. While the film begins with a gentle, easygoing vibe, the plot becomes almost too melodramatic near the end. The romantic content is also unsatisfying from a BL perspective.

Unfortunately, the weak plot undermines the sexy moments, and it's tough to take this borderline erotica seriously.

This short film definitely gets points for doing something different. Love Advisor is unique because the entire story occurs during a lengthy chat between the main characters. The movie leans heavily on snappy dialogue, charismatic acting, and surprise twists to carry those thirty minutes. Despite the creative setup, the romance is lacklustre and doesn't measure up to a typical BL narrative.

As the protagonist contemplates reconciliation, a shocking incident threatens their relationship.
Beneath the cheerful comedy and carefree tone, Made on the Rooftop tackles emotional topics. I appreciate the movie's messages about navigating adversity with a positive mindset. It strikes the right balance between heaviness and lightheartedness for an enjoyable viewing experience. Although there are two couples, the love stories lack a sense of passion and seduction. This film is more effective at conveying friendship than romance.

Moneyboys is a Taiwanese movie that explores the world of gay sex workers. Although filmed in the country of Taiwan, the story is supposed to take place in China. The main character comes from an impoverished rural background. He escapes to the city and makes a living as a rentboy. His career comes with many challenges, including physical danger, emotional torment, and financial burdens.
Despite the stylish aesthetic and some meaningful commentary, I don't feel passionate about Moneyboys. There are several inspiring moments, but this gritty gay movie seems excessively melodramatic. The cynical narrative, cliched dialogue, and emotionally distant protagonist fail to connect with me.

No Law, No Heaven is a Hong Kong short movie about an adolescent raised in an impoverished neighbourhood. Since childhood, the main character lived in poor conditions with his family. He seems resigned to inheriting his father's local restaurant instead of pursuing bigger dreams. The protagonist befriends a British tourist with a passion for photography. They form a connection despite coming from different walks of life.
The award-winning No Law, No Heaven shows remarkable storytelling prowess for a student film. The adolescent tale examines many mature themes, from economic hardships to family expectations. It also highlights Hong Kong's history, culture, and traditions with a cinematic flair. The protagonist's gay sexual awakening adds another complex layer to the plot. Plus, the sensitive acting performances elevate this poignant short movie.

The rest of the story continues in the second film, Once in Memory: Just Found Love.
The two young leads bring solid performances to Once in Memory: Love at First Sight. They have the looks and charisma to carry a casual teen BL drama. Unfortunately, the romance is too lightweight and doesn't make a memorable impression. This forgettable high school love story is unlikely to register in my mind after first sight.

The picturesque scenery sets a romantic backdrop for Once in Memory: Wish Me Luck. This short thirty-minute movie portrays a sweet love story with a serene atmosphere. Red Wine in the Night (2015)
Red Wine in the Night is a Thai supernatural thriller that focuses on a precarious gay romance. The protagonist is a young man who has been unlucky in love, until he meets a mysterious stranger inside an abandoned building. When the stranger's secret identity comes to light, the two main characters embark on a journey filled with passion, tension, and bloodshed.
Although the plot in Red Wine in the Night is borderline ridiculous, I still found this movie enjoyable, entertaining, and exhilarating to watch. Packed with steamy kisses and fit guys in their underwear, I had a lot of fun indulging myself in this delightfully decadent story.

Sweet Boy (2016)
Sweet Boy is a Thai BL movie about a high school student entangled in scandalous campus drama. The main character excels academically, but he is inexperienced with romance and slowly navigates his sexuality. In his journey of self-enlightenment, he is faced with savage bullying, lustful desires, and heartbreaking love affairs.
I write this review solely to warn people about Sweet Boy, an abysmal movie that I regretted upon watching it. This disturbing story is the exact opposite of sweet. The film leaves an unpleasant aftertaste with its amateurish writing, problematic tropes, and irresponsible portrayals.
