University BL dramas are messier than high school romances. More complicated. And way more relatable if you've survived college yourself. Maybe it's because these characters are finally out of their parents' house, making their own (terrible) decisions. They can actually kiss without worrying that a teacher is gonna catch them. There's less of that "oh no, we made eye contact" energy. More "so what are we doing about this attraction?" Don't get me wrong, college BL dramas can still be super cute and innocent. But these love stories are usually more mature.
The campus setting is a goldmine for many university BL series. Engineering students who are awkward as hell (why is it always engineers?). Medical students drowning in textbooks. Roommates falling for each other because they share a bathroom and that's apparently peak romance. University BL also nails that anxiety of being in your early twenties. You're supposed to have your life figured out, but you're really just winging it. Throw a cute guy into that mix and suddenly everything is even more confusing.
