BL directors are the ones behind the camera, bringing our favourite love stories to life. Without their creative vision, some of those unforgettable BL moments wouldn't be quite the same. When we watch BL dramas, most of our attention goes to the actors. Who's that handsome guy? What's his name? Hey, I get it. I'm guilty of spending way too much time admiring the eye candy too. However, the directors also deserve recognition. The best ones have a distinctive style. After watching enough of their work, you'll recognize their little trademarks.
Whenever I enjoy a BL drama, I like looking into the director's previous projects. Sometimes, I discover they've worked on another series that I adored. Oh, so that's why I liked both series! Other times, I'll check out their filmography and find a hidden gem that slipped under my radar. It's a fun way to discover new BL dramas, especially when you've already watched all the popular ones.
Some of the most famous BL directors include:
- Aof Noppharnach Chaiwimol (Thailand)
- Ray Jiang (Taiwan)
- Yang Kyung Hee (Korea)
- Takehiro Shindo (Japan)
Here's my list of BL directors who have worked on Boys Love dramas over the years. You can learn more about their careers and discover which BL series they've directed. Maybe you'll even find a new favourite filmmaker!
Famous BL Directors
Which directors make the best BL dramas?

Some BL directors have become pretty famous among fans. If there's a king of BL directors, Aof Noppharnach Chaiwimol deserves the crown. He's the mastermind behind some of GMMTV's most beloved dramas, including Bad Buddy, A Tale of Thousand Stars, Last Twilight, and Ticket to Heaven. His BL dramas are entertaining, but they also have meaningful messages that resonate with viewers. I'd even give Aof some credit for helping Thai BL become so popular worldwide. He raised the industry standards.
Taiwan has Ray Jiang, another director with an impressive résumé. Before becoming a big name in BL, he had already won a Golden Bell Award in 2018. Since then, Ray has brought his filmmaking talents to gorgeous BL series like Unknown and Wishing Upon the Shooting Stars. Let's also give Yang Kyung Hee her flowers. Lately, she's on a winning streak. The Time of Fever was excellent, Secret Relationships became a fan favourite, and The Prosecutor's Proposal continued her hot streak in 2026. Hit after hit! She has figured out what BL audiences enjoy watching.
Over in Japan, Takehiro Shindo has been keeping himself mighty busy. He directed both seasons of Cosmetic Playlover and returned for both seasons of School Trip: Joined a Group I'm Not Close To. I appreciate his consistency. Whenever Shindo is in charge, I can usually count on an enjoyable drama. Of course, plenty of other BL directors deserve an honourable mention. Pepzi helped bring the outrageous world of KinnPorsche to life, while Nuchy gave us the politically charged Not Me. We're lucky to have so many talented filmmakers working in BL!
